I'm looking very specifically for 2.5d platforming games that uses sprites instead of 3d models for its characters. If anyone remembers Klonoa for the PS1, that's mostly what I'm going for.

Also, to keep this from just being a boring request thread, is there a particular style of game you remember that is fairly unconventional in its approach that you wish you saw more of?

As I recall Cave Story 3D for the 3DS had 3D backgrounds and the option to choose between 3D character models and 2D sprites. Although to be honest I thought it looked terrible compared to its 2D counterpart.

There's also the Prinny games on the PSP. I've only played the first one but it's a lot of fun (and tough as balls). It also looks a lot better than Cave Story 3D.

And definitely check out Tombi/Tomba for the PS1. One of my favourite PS1 games.

Prinny and Cave Story are completely flat though. If you specifically mean something where the 2D plane twists around 3D space like Klonoa then I can't think of any examples. Tomba doesn't do it either but it has areas where you turn 90 degrees in 3D space as well as jumping between the background and foreground.

Lomax in Lemmingland was great on PS1. Worth tracking down if you can due to the amazing pixel art. I think the guy responsible went on to work on some of Wayforward's Shantae games.

Super Paper Mario on Wii sort of uses flat characters on 3D planes.
