As a longtime fan of Japanese console RPGs, the announcement yesterday [http://www.workingdesigns.com/forum/showthread.php?t=118916] that Working Designs has closed down really ... well, sucks. They specialized in localizing interesting and overlooked titles for the US market, especially RPGs, and I was always impressed with the care and quality they put in their work. They raised the standard of quality considerably, both in localization and packaging, and I'm sad to see them go.

From the announcement, it looks like the proverbial straw was approval battles with SCEA (the Sony office that manage their North American consoles) over Goemon. SCEA has previous Working Designs titles [http://www.the-magicbox.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-9745.html].

I have to say I'm disturbed by this apparant 'flashiness over quality' preference at the licensing level. It's one thing if a developer chooses graphics over gameplay, but rejecting quality games like Growlanser and Viewtiful Joe strikes me as a form of market censorship that the industry doesn't really need. If anything, we need someone filtering out games like MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch [http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/mtvscelebritydeathmatch/review.html?sid=6077399] instead.

I couldn't get into Viewtiful Joe, but I can see why every one else did and I loved Growlanser. Spent many an hour with it. Many of the most engaging games I've ever played were Japanese in base and there was more of a focus on story and such than there was on making a game with more bump mapping or whatever. That's how I like it. God of War was a beautiful game, but I'd have played it if it hadn't looked as good because the story was rock ass. I'll be the first to say that graphics matter, in a going forward sort of manner, but I will also say that all the nice graphics in the world will amount to dick if the games suck.

Speaking of which, when is God of War 2 coming out? I want it now!

II was really crushed when I read about WD being finished. I remember scraping pennies together tto pick up the limited edition version of Lunar: Silver Star Story for my PS1. I also have fond memories of playing one of the best action RPGs of all time, Alundra.

Oh, slighlyt OT, but someone syndicated the louge on Livejournal too: http://www.livejournal.com/users/escapist_blog/

I sold my PS copy of Lunar on Ebay for 80 bucks.

Working Desings are the latest in a slew of good companies that went under in the recent past, Stainless Steel Studios and Troika also bit the dust this year.

This is tremendously sad news. Not only for Working Designs, but for Victor Ireland. Vic Ireland is a gamer himself, and helped Grandma and I out personally by providing a copy of Growlanser Generations: Deluxe Edition for free. EXTREMELY generous man.

Working Designs will be greatly missed in the gaming community.
