Square Enix: 360 Version of Final Fantasy XIV Just on Hold

While Final Fantasy XIV still has obstacles to overcome, its producer says that reports of its death on the 360 have been exaggerated.

Back in June it was reported [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101640-Final-Fantasy-XIV-Not-Coming-to-360s-Because-of-Xbox-Live] that Final Fantasy XIV [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-XIV-Pc/dp/B002I0JJ2U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1282162756&sr=8-2] had been cancelled on the Xbox 360 because the closed nature of Xbox Live made it all but impossible for the game to go ahead. But now it seems that statement is only half true, and the game might go ahead after all.

Despite previous comments to the contrary, producer Hiromachi Tanaka said that the 360 version hadn't been cancelled, but instead was on hold while Square Enix attempted to come to an agreement with Microsoft. He confirmed that the problem was Xbox Live, but said that it was the only thing preventing the game appearing on the platform.

Obviously this is a positive development for Xbox-owning Final Fantasy fans, but it leaves FFXIV in a rather precarious position. You could argue that it would be better if it had been cancelled, because at least that way fans would know for sure. Hopefully, the situation will be resolved quickly one way or the other, with a positive outcome obviously preferred.

Final Fantasy XIV is released for PC on September 30th, with a PS3 version coming in March.

I think I'll just stick to the PS3 version. I play FFXI on 360 already and I think it's better to have them on seperate consoles. If I had a good PC I'd have them on that. I also think that it will be a lazy port for 360 but we'll see when it gets released in 2012.

I really want to play XIV, as I really want to start an MMO at launch, and played XI for a few years.

However the specifications are pretty high on PC, and I can't run it, even on the lowest settings. I was going to pick up a PS3 to play it on, but that's not coming out untill 6 months after launch. So much for starting in a fresh, virgin world. ¬,¬

It's coming out for PC in September, and PS3 in March. As with XI, players from both platforms will play together on the same servers. I hear one of the reasons Microsoft aren't playing ball with SE is cross-platform play, and how SE want the game to be available to silver members.

"Xbox-owning Final Fantasy fans"

I'm not a fanboy or anything but are there really any fans of FF with only a 360?

Supposedly the PS3 version has been delayed because they are having trouble getting it to run acceptably on the PS3. SE basically went insane and made a game with ridiculous graphics that requires a $4000 computer to run at maximum detail settings at 60fps.

Those beta testers complaining they had to upgrade to a Core i7 and HD 4870 or equivalent graphics card to run the game acceptably are running the game on *medium* graphics settings. hex core CPUs and quad SLI/Crossfire setups are just barely able to run the game at 60fps with everything cranked to maximum (god help you if you want that on a triple monitor setup, you'll have to wait another year or two for new hardware to come out than can run it like that)

That said, the game does look freaking amazing with everything cranked up. But I have to question their sanity in making a mass market game where they are basically asking you to buy a new computer if you want it to look like the screenshots on the back of the box. Most people aren't going to understand why the game has to look like poo to run at an acceptable framerate on their "perfectly good" 4 year old Dell PC that "runs WoW just fine"

Square Enix *will* have to make graphical compromises to get this hog to run on the PS3 and 360, there is just no way around it.

I have a feeling it will brick, considering the abysmal support for FF11.

(I personally didn't like it.)

FFXI is actually successful in Japan, in fact it's basically the only MMO that the japanese have ever actually given a crap about. Typically MMOs have never been popular in japan, FFXI being the notable exception.

Look at Nexon games. Then say that again.
Also Yay? I mean this could mean XBL players are seperated from PC/PS3 players, but if they ever include something as STUPID as PlayOnline in any of the 3 games again I will be annoyed.

OMG if FFIV breaks open XBL to play with PSN?

There's nothing but "good for gamers" in that. If S/E can do this, and I do hope they do, I foresee a detente of EPIC proportions hitting the community. Honestly.

Oh, so the PC and PS2 players played together? That's cool. I still don't really like Final Fantasy, but that's still cool.

I think the problems lie with the fact Square-Enix want to make the game cross platform meaning PC, PS3 and potentially 360 players can play together.

I'm sure that Microsoft arent keen on the idea of of their Live subscribers sitting in the same boat as PS3 users.

Personally I think it would be amazing. Play the game on any system? Awesome!

PC PS2 and 360 users all play on the same servers in FFXI and accounts are interchangeable. i.e. you can create an account on the PS2 and later start playing the same account from PC or 360. Even the regcodes are interchangeable.

I am a Xbox owner and I too would love for this to come to the system.

A question though. A lot of you are saying the minimum requirements for the game are still high. I have read the requirements but I'm not too smart with computer details. Could someone fill me in on how good your computer must be for the minimum requirements?

SE has a benchmark that you can run that will score your system and give you a general idea.

http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/media/benchmark/na/

Supposedly the current beta of the game is more optimized (benchmark is Alpha code) so the actual game will run smoother. Forced FSAA has no effect on the benchmark but the actual game supports FSAA through it's graphics configuration.

My i7 860 with 8 megs and an HD 4850 graphics card gets around 4000 at 1920x1080 and slightly under 6000 at 1280x720.
