Mortal Kombat Vs Street Fighter Could Be "Inevitable"

According to the producer of the latest Mortal Kombat game, we may see Sub-Zero square off with Chun-Li someday.

Mortal Kombat [http://www.amazon.com/Super-Street-Fighter-IV-Playstation-3/dp/B002TDIEEK/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1282340036&sr=1-1] are two of the most popular fighting game franchises in history, though they couldn't differ more in personality. Mortal Kombat is about extreme violence and fatalities, while Street Fighter has characters that are more cartoonish and silly. This may not stop them from coming together someday, if NetherRealm Studios producer Hector Sanchez knows what he's talking about.

Crossover fighting games are all the rage at Capcom, with the Tekken [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102342-Namco-Capcom-Crossover-Confirmed-at-Comic-Con]. Sanchez seems to believe this company crossover could pave the way for Ken to go up against Scorpion, if it does well enough.

Sanchez, currently working on a new Mortal Kombat reboot, told CVG [http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=261048] a Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter crossover is "inevitable," but it would "depend on the success of Street Fighter X Tekken." He also reveals that Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon actually pitched the crossover over ten years ago.

He knows that there's one key problem that could stop a Mortal Kombat X Street Fighter from being what it should be, and that's fatalities. Sanchez admits: "Obviously there are problems with that. I'm not sure Capcom would be happy with Scorpion ripping Ken's head off."

He's hit it right on top of Ken's head. Mortal Kombat is so uniquely violent that it can't properly be put alongside another IP unless it's spitting acid in its face and gouging its eyes out. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe [http://www.amazon.com/Mortal-Kombat-vs-Universe-Xbox-360/dp/B0017ZDGWG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1282339573&sr=8-2] was a great concept, but we weren't going to see Batman's dismembered head no matter how cool that would have been. Is Capcom going to allow Ken and Ryu to be viciously murdered either? It should, but it probably won't. And no, I can't explain why it would be so fun to see Ken's head sail through the air. It just would.

So tempted for a [HEADING=2]FINISH HIM![/HEADING] but I don't know if it can work. For a start, the control systems are really different and while SF relies on cross-over combos, alpha counters - MK is more of a SNK type fighter.

And killing off Chun Li? Not on. Even by Reptile.

I would. And take Zangief too while you're at it.

Well, I don't really like the premise of this. Not being such a huge Mortal Kombat fan might make me a bit biased, but Street Fighter is more than good enough on its own.

I personally would enjoy watching Scorpion rip out Chun Li's various organs. Or Zub Zero forcibly remove Ryu's spine. Whats so wrong with that?

When the death knell begins to sound for Street Fighter much as it has sounded for Mortal Kombat, expect this to happen.
Until then, we can just dream on..

If the rumors are true, I'll be surprised. Especially since MK is known for gory fatalities and SF is known for non gory fighting.

Also I didn't like the weak fatalities on MK vs DC.

Akuma must be added. He's more likely to kill anyway. And let's just assume Akuma opens the portal to MK land and accidentally puts his dark-hadu into everyone.
M.Bision, Sagat, Ryu, Akuma could all be added without much problem. Proxicide showed us a long time ago just how epic a crossover would be.
Decapitating Shuryuken!
Face-melting Hadoken!

Sorry to say but there's really nothing "inevitable" about it. Sure, you can have that fight on MUGEN or whatever other crappy engine that lets you just plop characters into it but as it stands, Mortal Kombat is just a tiny tiny blip in the radar in the vast sea of fighting games. The only time the series had ever been "big" was the time it was considered this horrid thing that rots the youth's brains. Scorpion is not Spider-Man. Not even close.

And I'm not saying this because I hate Mortal Kombat. I just think it's kind of sad that MK is basically the only big effort westerners have done to have a fighting game and even that is, well, not on par with what the Japanese (or even the Chinese!) have done on that front.

Yes indeed, Guilty Gear and was the best fighting game of the 90's.

I can't see this happening without some major compromises, and even then the idea just leaves me with bitter thoughts. Mortal Kombat was never good, it was known only for its over the top violence and not its fighting. It was one of the worst popular games ever and I'm surprised the franchise isn't dead yet.

Oh well, this reboot looks acceptable from initial impressions, but given the series' track record I'll remain pessimistic. Maybe if they left Capcom in charge of the combat we may see something cool, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

Still a decent concept, but one that can just turn out horrendously.

Now Killer Instinct Vs Mortal Kombat is something I would like to see. You guys remember Killer Instinct right? It was like Mortal Kombat....only GOOD. I wanna kick the shit out of Sub-Zero with Glacius :p
