Final Fantasy XIV Open Beta Delayed

Game-breaking bugs have reared their ugly heads in Final Fantasy XIV, forcing Square-Enix to revise its timetable.

Square-Enix has announced that the open beta of its new MMO Final Fantasy XIV [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-XIV-Pc/dp/B002I0JJ2U ], which was scheduled to launch either later today or early tomorrow depending on where you are, has been postponed until further notice.

Square-Enix apologized for any inconvenience, blaming the delay on the discovery of "critical bugs." There's currently no indication as to when the new start of the open beta will be, with the announcement only saying that a new schedule would be released at a "later date." Square-Enix didn't say what the bugs were, but they are clearly serious enough to force the company to stop the beta just hours before it was due to go live.

With so little information, it's impossible to even begin to speculate as to what might be happening, when the beta will begin, or what effect this will have on the game's PC release on September 30th. We also don't know if the bugs are limited to just the PC version, or whether they affect the PS3 version - which is due to be released in March 2011 - as well. Hopefully Square-Enix will be able to fix the bugs quickly and the beta won't be delayed for too long, but we'll have to wait and see.

And I just got the email today. Shame, with all the major changes to the standard MMO formula, I was looking forward to how it all worked.

Also, the FFXIV version updater suffers from sucking.

It's slow, clunky, and crashes if I try to play a game while having it on.

Better that they sort it out now before they get a load of pointless rage on forums complaining over how its full of bugs, hell, at least it looks like they're putting in the hours trying to make a workable MMO, unlike most devs........I'm looking at you Cryptic

Same here. I just assumed it was because of the delay.

I'm still at 0.0% last time I checked.

And XIV is meant to release in 30 days? Is anyone thinking they're not hitting that release date?

Ditto. Spinwhiz and I both got emails today, and were both looking forward to it. Maybe they'll clear it up by the weekend - that would be nice.

I'm on my second update, I believe, but it tends to download at 9 kB/s and upload at around 90.

I got accepted into one of the closed betas. Not that I ever got to play it; the Square-Enix updater fucking sucks.

I got my open beta invitation, and am definitely looking forward to giving it a spin if or when they get this showstopping bug fixed. But then, I really liked Final Fantasy XI, grind and all.

Oh no, another FF game? An MMO this time? You know it's just gonna be an endless scavanger hunt more or less. I'm guessing the critical bug was probably due to the game being boring and repetitive.

Yeah, I've been pissed at FF since FFXI, how did you guess?

The Site claims that on rare occassions the game wouldnt start.

If thats what they think is a critical bug then everything else must be smooooooooooooooooooth :p
