Activision Claims Call of Duty Hasn't Peaked Yet

Call of Duty's European general manager says that Activision's goal with Call of Duty: Black Ops [http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Black-Ops-Xbox-360/dp/B003JVKHEQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1283795806&sr=8-1] is to break the record it set by its predecessor.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Modern-Warfare-Xbox-360/dp/B00269QLI8/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1283796179&sr=1-1] exploded into the record books last year, selling nearly five million copies on its first day and becoming the biggest media release in history. Equaling something so momentous would be an incredible feat, but Michaël Sportouch, Activision's European general manager, thinks that Black Ops might just be able to do it.

Sportouch said that the resources that Activision had invested in both the making and marketing of Black Ops was the highest of any title the publisher had ever made, which had resulted in a fantastic game and a fantastic campaign. He added that Black Ops would be available on more platforms than Modern Warfare 2, and would be able to take advantage of a higher install base on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

But despite the investment and the favorable conditions, Sportouch hadn't allowed himself to become over-confident, and said that it wouldn't be easy to beat Modern Warfare 2's record. He added that there were a lot of high-profile games - games such as Medal of Honor [http://www.amazon.com/Medal-Honor-Limited-Xbox-360/dp/B000TI836G/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1283796098&sr=1-1], Gran Turismo 5 [http://www.amazon.com/Gran-Turismo-5-Playstation-3/dp/B002BSA1C6/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1283796132&sr=1-1] and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood [http://www.amazon.com/Assassins-Creed-Brotherhood-Xbox-360/dp/B003L8HQ7S/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1283796029&sr=1-1] - that would be competing with Black Ops for consumers' money.

It's certainly not impossible that Black Ops could outsell MW2, but many analysts don't think it actually will, and have predicted [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101999-Analyst-Black-Ops-Could-Sell-12-Million-Copies] sales [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100973-Treyarch-Says-Infinity-Ward-Mess-Wont-Be-a-Distraction] of between ten and twelve million copies. While those are excellent figures, they're just over half of what Modern Warfare 2 has sold to date. Whatever happens, we're going to have to wait until the game is released on November 9th to know for sure.

Uuh.

And to think I was foolish enough to believe they were referring to it's quality.

Lol people are getting sick of the CoD series. Trust me look at how many people play MW2 on PC. Hardly 10k on any time I check. It could change with dedicated servers, but when trying to compare this game to other FPSs on PC you fall short of Battlefield Series, and Half Life, TF2, and CSS. The game is too arcade style and leaves people without the feel of accomplishment.

I'm no longer disappointed in Activision, but in myself because I actually believe they were going to improve.

Lets face it people we all liked Mw2 for the time being, only when it got boring we began to hate the game and that hate turned into a hype...

OT: Isn't this a bit logic that a game hasn't peaked before its release?

Watch, they'll consider it a failure for failing to beat MW2's record. Even though it'll turn a profit, they'll be disappointed.

MW2 was the biggest selling game ever because MW1 was so good. Everyone thought "Holy shit the sequel to the best shooter ever" and bought it and told their friends to buy it.

Now everyone is thinking "Wow MW2 was a pretty big disappointment, especially the campaign, maybe I'll give that Medal of Honor thing a try".

They aren't breaking any records. Even if they deserve to and Black Ops is the greatest game of all time, they won't. Too many people have a bitter aftertaste lingering in their mouths after MW2.

that figure sounds about as likely as Metal gear solid 4: 'Gameplay edition' being released.
seriously though, some sketchey period weapons and a crossbow arn't gonna cut it if the campaign is seven hours long...(thats almost 2-3 hours longer!)

A short campaign and a hacked multiplayer, why are we buying these games again?

my prediction is that black ops will sell very very well but not as well as MW2 because people who want a new shooter will likely choose between Black ops and Halo Reach. Where MW2 came out with no competition in sight Black ops has allot. Also Black opps will be regarded as Treyarch's best Cod game and while not as good as Cod 4 it will be a little bit better than MW2

I wonder if Activision realizes that profit isn't a very good motivator for creative work. For mechanical type stuff, yeah, but when it's the sole motivator for creative stuff the work tends to be a lot shoddier.

I don't know if that's supposed to be a jab at CoD or a MGS4.

I'm pretty sure it won't break MW2 records, nor will the next few COD-s.
I've seen too many people telling that they were dissapointed with MW2. A lot of people have lost their trust in the game.

Almost everybody I know bought MW2. People who weren't gamers bought MW2. Black Ops can't compete.

And I thought this post was about the quality of the games, not sales.......
