Daily Tidbits Countdown to BioShock Infinite Gameplay Reveal

While we wait for the public outing of BioShock Infinite's gameplay trailer, Irrational Games is revealing details about the game daily.

If all you know about BioShock [http://www.amazon.com/BioShock-Infinite-Xbox-360/dp/B003O6EB70/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1284328491&sr=8-1] in a floating city with new characters, Irrational wants to teach you otherwise. The developer will be releasing a gameplay trailer to the public on September 21, but in the meantime is offering tidbits about BioShock Infinite every day leading up to the reveal.

Over on the Irrational Games Blog [http://irrationalgames.com/insider/] is an in-progress feature called "10 Things You Should Know About BioShock Infinite" writted by Irrational community manager Chris Remo. He'll be updating the feature daily, and already has two posts under his belt.

The first imparts that not every character in BioShock Infinite will be hostile and automatically want to kill you. Though they might talk about you and scowl, their behaviors are unpredictable. Remo also attempts to show the difference between BioShock's city of Rapture, which was basically dying, and Infinite's city of Columbia, which is still vibrant and alive.

The second post talks about Infinite's main character, Booker DeWitt, and covers why he's on the floating city of Columbia. Unlike the named protagonist of Half-Life, Infinite's hero will have his own voice and personality, and that personality might not be as squeaky clean as you'd expect.

After the feature ends, BioShock Infinite's gameplay trailer will first be released on Xbox Live and Xbox.com. The following day on September 22, it'll be released "elsewhere." With shots of the mustachioed Handyman revealed last week, I wonder what other secrets it could hold.

Seriously? People announce the release dates for their trailers now?

"Hey guys, get exited! Because on the 18th of September we're going to let you know the date of the announcement of the date on which we will be releasing some concept art!"

Don't get me wrong, the game sounds cool and all, and I'll probably pick it up, but this hype generation is getting a bit ridiculous.

I really don't want to buy this game. I don't want to succumb. And yet, I already have the £40 ready in my hand. Damn you Irrational Games!

I don't get the irrational (har har) hate that BioShock Infinite is already getting. People say that it's "ridiculous" now and "how the hell could this be connected to Rapture?!" and "it's not a 'BioShock' without Rapture!" when we know nothing of the actual game itself yet. Hell, didn't we complain that BioShock 2 was staying in Rapture (Levine and the team on the original BioShock had NOTHING to do with #2, just sayin')?

Besides, not every game absolutely, set in stone, has to be continued. The GTA series have multiple games garnering the same title, because it's all "Grand Theft Auto". I don't see why BioShock can't take that route and explore new concepts, considering the title could be interpreted as "A Shock to one's Life" (my personal favorite interpretation).

I see that Microsoft have made another cartel with a game design studio that I (used to) like!

It's sickening that they can make it so everything, (even trailers now, for goodness' sake) is released on their system first. It's stealing availability from the consumer to slightly improve their sales. I don't care if that works economically or not - it is a disgusting marketing tactic.

As for the game, it sounds like, like BS2, Irrational will try new ideas that keep things interesting and different from the last game. I think the new game world has the potential to re-invigorate the franchise.

Cool, will have to keep an eye on that site.

On a sad note, I know it's only one screenshot, but I'm really, really not liking the look of the handyman in that picture. Pity, as on a closer inspection of the trailer again, the hands do look almost human there as well. Seeing it here though, the combination of those huge, almost human hands, red and white striped trousers and the moustachioed face just seems a little too goofy for my liking.

They sure are big though...

Edit: Great art on those Game Informer covers though. It would be neat if a publication on this side of the pond did something similar at some point.

I have to say, though, drip feeding game information through a blog is a clever little tactic. How else would you invigorate fan forums?

That magazine is brilliant, truly. It's cheaper than everything else we have here (except The Escapist of course, but hey, Informer's printed so it's not exactly competition), super deep with its features, and has fewer ads than all the other Australian magazines.

There sure has been a whole lot of information about this game, considering it won't be out until 2012.
They probably figure we'll be dead by then anyway.

I fully expect this game to get moved up to late next year, the 2012 date is just so they don't have to delay it.

Blame the way the media exploded. It went from word of mouth to magazines to websites, from limited knowledge to monthly direct knowledge to up-to-the-minute everything. And who kept spurring it along? The gamers who wanted the next tidbit of knowledge ten seconds ago. The ones who frequent news sites and the like, seeking the next choice story about their favorite games, studios, consoles, etc. In short, the folks on these forums and who frequent this site. It's hardly a BAD thing, and I'd argue it does more good for the industry at times, but this is just the world we live in now. And we helped make it that way.

OT, hell yeah. I love this sorta stuff. Nothing like getting tidbits of data and ideas and behind the scenes malarky.

Seriously what is people's problem with saying "titbit"?
It's what is said in America. They find the word tit to be inappropriate and too embarrassing. But it's fine. I couldn't care less.

I couldN'T care less.

Man I love David Mitchell.

OT: Well that's nice. Glad to know we won't have to guess when the trailer is.

Calumon: An announcement for the release date for when we will show you our game but not let you play it? That's mean.

Oh, Australia, I somehow though it was a US magazine :p. Still, my sentiment stands. Anyway, if they don't grave the cover of a magazine over here, they will likely show up in the inevitable special edition release. On that topic, I wonder if Irrational will feel inclined to top the Bioshock 2 collectors edition at all (being, in my opinion, the very embodiment of what a good collectors edition should be).
