Tsunoda: iPad's Wild Success Won't Compare to Kinect

The iPad has sold millions since its launch in April, which Microsoft says is nothing compared to Kinect's future success.

Microsoft is either setting itself up for a huge amount of success with Kinect, or an embarrassing failure. The device's creative director and number one cheerleader Kudo Tsunoda is predicting sales that will beat out even the popular iPad.

Though the company line states that Kinect will sell 3 million [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103519-Microsoft-Predicts-3-Million-Kinect-Sales-Over-the-Holidays], Tsunoda thinks it'll also flat out beat Apple's almost-a-laptop. "The pre-orders have been really strong," he said in an interview with Gamasutra. "As far as what we're looking at for holiday, this is going to be stuff that'll blow away any of the sales you've seen with iPad."

The iPad, released on April 3, sold 300,000 units on the first day and has been moving around 1 million units per month since. The Xbox 360 system itself sold around 350,000 last month.

For Kinect to beat the iPad, and to "blow it away" no less, it'll have to triple those numbers. Even with its unexpectedly high price tag of $150 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102214-Microsoft-Confirms-Kinect-for-149], Microsoft thinks Kinect will burst onto the scene.

"The Xbox 360 is already selling better than the Wii and Sony right now," Tsunoda continued. "Kinect's really just going to boost that to a whole new level."

What strikes me most is the pure confidence, and dare I say arrogance on Tsuoda's and Microsoft's part. You don't make statements like this unless you know something. If pre-orders are really strong enough to support claims that Kinect will sell more than 1 million units per month, all I can say is that Justin Bieber must have done his job [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101708-Justin-Bieber-Brainwashing-Teens-to-Buy-Kinect].

Oh good god Kudo you weird sunglasses wearing fool.

Kinect does not have a picture of a half eaten apple on the back of it. People are not going to buy that shit up like gangbusters no matter what the faults unless you put a half eaten apple on the back of it. Business 101 man.

Your delusion that you can compete with Apple's "we'll buy anything you put out" extreme loyalist fans is really cute, though.

With all this talk about the Kinect I'll have to go to Wikipedia to find out what the darn thing is.

The cheapest iPad is $500, yet the iFlail is not even half that price and they expect to beat it? I can't see how they can even justify this statement.

They were talking about sales, not money made. So in this case, being cheaper than an iPad would help in just total units sold.

Of course, lots of people think $150 for Kinect is already way too much.

True, although there are some out there that buy simply because it's expensive.

I have an iPad and it's pretty useless, but I know I'd still get more of my moneys worth than I would if I ever bought one of those kinects.

I usually just use my iPad as a video iPod.

Why has Microsoft become such a "me-too" lately? Sony and Nintendo make consoles, so they had to make one. Apple made a best-selling MP3 player, so they had to make one. Google has a popular search engine, so they had to try to one-up them on that too. Now they're not even bothering to compete with a remotely similar product. WTF?

By the way, how'zat multitouch coffee table workin' out for ya, Microsoft?

you forgot at least silverlight<->flash and all the other crap they do copy.

anyway: I think Kinect will sell pretty poor and leave another nice crater in their wallet.
Well, at least I hope so.

I read this and burst out laughing. Really? Really? Do you actually believe that?

And who gives a shit how many it sells? It's at a break even price-point, if I remember right.

So you're relying on people to buy the games.

You're aiming for essentially the same market as the Wii.
Didn't most of the "family" and "casual gamers" only buy one or two games for their Wiis?
Add to that the fact that most people who want a Wii have gone to the toilet bought a Wii already...

That said, I predict failure, so the most likely outcome is wild success.

silverlight isn't comparable to flash... flash does not support hardware-acceleration, nor does flash allow you to write/read files from your computer (except for a simple cookie, which is how you can save a game in flash).
I think silverlight does not get enough attention, because it really is a nice technology. and microsoft does copy sometimes. but why are copies that bad? the very idea of windows was copied, yet they made it more succesful then any of it's competitors.
my point was that it was also copied/"inspired", and the term "crap" was more a way of talking then my way of judging its quality. I dont know enough about silverlight to judge it (although I would like to justify any insult with the argument that its from MS^^' ).

I... I think I see what you did there...

OT: It will not outsell the iPad, I'm all for shooting for the stars but this is just going to make you look like a fool when it does not sell nearly as much as the iPad.

I feel like this is way too much arrogance for their own good. The danger is now if they don't sell as well as they predict that they will, people will be able to look back at this and laugh. Hard.

Something tells me they are going to regret saying this.
