Madden NFL 11 Wisecrack Annoys CFL Player

The Madden NFL series may be the most popular sports simulation in the universe but a shocking insult in Canadian Football League [http://www.amazon.com/Madden-NFL-11-Xbox-360/dp/B002I0JB6E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1284744368&sr=8-1] kicker.

Okay, so maybe it's not quite that bad, but a gentle zinger by in-game announcer Cris Collinsworth did get under the skin of one CFL player. In the latest Madden game, Collinsworth will sometimes react to an out-of-bounds punt by saying, "Unbelievable. The field is 53-and-a-half yards wide and he still missed it. We're going to have to send him to Canada," presumably a reference to the CFL's larger, 65-yard-wide field. But Noel Prefontaine, a kicker/punter with the Edmonton Eskimos [http://www.esks.com/], was not amused.

"Obviously Chris has never been to Canada," Prefontaine told the NFL [http://www.edmontonsun.com/sports/football/2010/09/15/15364391.html] guy that does all three [kickoffs, place kicking and punting]."

"It's hard to develop all three techniques and do it at a high level," he continued. "If Chris was a kicker and he had to do all three, then I'm sure he would understand where I'm coming from."

He acknowledged that Collinsworth probably didn't have much input on his lines but nonetheless took exception over the "misinformation" contained in the game. "Obviously he doesn't understand that kicking field goals in this league is harder than it is in the NFL because of where the hashes are set, so you deal with tougher angles," Prefontaine said. "But that's fine, it doesn't bother me any. This is the game that I've always played, this is the game that I love and comments like that come from ignorant people that don't really understand what the game is up here and what kickers have to deal with up here."

Not everyone shared Prefontaine's indignation, however. "I play Madden 11 all the time. I beat up on [teammates] Lawrence Gordon and Chris Thompson all day," said Eskimos slotback Fred Stamps. "If the kicker kicks out of bounds, [they say] the field isn't wide enough, they need to send him to Canada or something. That's pretty good."

As Yahoo! Sports [http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/cfl/blog/cfl_experts/post/Collinsworth-s-CFL-comments-a-shot-or-a-shoutou?urn=cfl-270341] pointed out, the Sun did manage to extract a small measure of payback by misspelling Cris Collinsworth's name as "Chris" throughout its entire article.

In the CFL special teams really is 1/3rd of the game. Many NFL fans don't realize how much more kicking there is in the CFL, considering there are only 3 downs.

Take it this way: if I said something along the lines of "Holy shit, you really fail at [insert occupation, such as brain surgery]. You really should move to the United States, maybe those morons will find a use to you".

Basically, I imply that people in the United States are morons. Not only brain surgeons.

EDIT: I do not think Unitedstaters are morons, by the way.

Ryan Succop. Mr. Irrelevant 2009 (The VERY last guy taken in the 2009 College Draft, that's over 250 guys taken before him). He does kickoffs, place kicking and punting for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Your move Noel.

Its just that, its a wisecrack. A joke. I could say "Resident evil 5 isnt racist because im black people are used to being shot", and if you take offence to it, thats fine. ((do note, i myself am an african amarican who lives in detriot, michigan)) But you dont try to bring down an entire publisher for it.

But the joke doesn't even begin to imply that Canada or Canadians is in any way inferior. The guy misses a huge target and the commentary jokingly suggests that he may do better if he had a larger target.

It's a simple fact that CFL fields are wider than NFL fields, but Prefontaine obviously thought the joke was about belittling the talents of Canadian players for some reason. This is a case of misunderstanding (and being overly sensitive) rather than a joke being offensive.

I agree, but then again, would you say that in a published media? You would definitely expose yourself to a lot of sissies, sadly. Comes with the territory.

I mean, I'm mostly against overdone political correctness. I'm curious to see who put his/her seal of approval on this text, in a published game, however. I know a legal department in a videogame company somewhere that is searching for an answer to this last question!

But it's okay, because he's Canadian, so he'll just apologize for getting mad.

I almost drafted him as my kicker for my fantasy football league just because I thought his name was cool.

OT: I don't see why the kicker gets so upset, it's just a little joke no need to get all worked up about it. This just further proves the point that kickers are head cases, doesn't matter whether it is canadian or american football.

So it was a misinformed statement no need to get a butt-hurt over it.
... that's just it, it's not a misinformed statement. it's a well-informed statement and some canook with an inferiority complex is getting all butthurt over it.

Punt is out of bounds! Clearly, the field is too narrow! Send him to the CFL, they play with a wider field!

Statement done!

This snowbunny kicker, however, is choosing to interpret the statement differently -- that the statement is "this guy is awful, send him to canada", and then he proceeds to launch into a whole tirade about how the CFL is actually harder for a kicker than the NFL. Meanwhile everyone else stands around with a bored expression on their face waiting for him to finish because THAT WAS NEVER THE ISSUE ANYWAY.

If someone's driving on the wrong side of the road here in the US, we might say "This isn't England" or something to that effect.

That's not disparaging the drivers in England by insinuating that, geez, this guy is a terrible driver and can't stay in his lane let's send him to England where they're all that bad. It's simply saying "You're on the wrong side of the road. They drive on that side in England.. but not here."

The punt statement is the same. "That punt's way wide. Maybe that would've worked if this was the CFL, with their wider fields.. but not here."

tldr; some CFL kicker is insecure about his Canadian-ness and lashes out at a *perceived, but not actual* insult.

Bah, no one likes football. It's all about Hockey and Basketball. And occasionally Baseball when theres enough people who are up for a game.

I can see where Noel is coming from. It can be interpreted that he should play in Canada because of the bigger fields. However, that could also be interpreted as them saying you don't need to be as accurate to play in the CFL, which is definitely not true.

Maybe he should stop worrying about what they're saying in Madden and start worrying about how shit the Eskimos are this year.
