Civilization V Special Edition Unboxing

Firaxis and 2K Games managed to make a good thing even better today with the release of the Civilization V Special Edition. If you've already read Greg Tito's excellent review of the game [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/8126-Review-Civilization-V], you know it's one game that no serious strategy fan can do without. Hardcore fans of the series won't want to stop at just getting a download code, though. For an extra fifty bucks, you might be able to snag one of the Special Editions.

The box includes a 176-page art book that reveals in-game assets, concept pieces, historical notes and comments from the artists themselves. It's an amazing book, not just for fans of the game, but for fans of art in general. If you're not a fan of printed material in today's digital world, there's also a "Making of" DVD and a double-CD soundtrack of the excellent music in the game. There are also five exclusive miniatures made by Reaper Miniatures - a barbarian, a swordsman, a rifleman, a longbowman and a super death robot.

Oh, and it also comes with a copy of the game.

And the game isn't even on the disk. You have to download it through Steam whether you have the disk or not. Which really pisses me off. I didn't buy the retail game to download the damn game.

Anyway, my bitching aside, all that stuff sure does sound nice. Especially the making-of DVD's. I love those things. I'd watch the video, but that would slow down my download of the game since the game doesn't come on the game disk.

Unless there's some insane way to install through the disk that I'm missing.

I managed to get it to work! Turns out I had to run the setup.exe file from the disk itself.
Kind of stupid how it defaults to downloading the game even though you have the disk. If I wanted to download it I'd have bought digitally.

Really the only think of note there seems to be those minatures, the artbook, DVD, and CDs are all pretty run of the mill and things I (and I figure most people by the reading I've done) rarely do. The big gimmick seems to be the minatures, and while nice I'm not sure if they are worth that much, and there is the big question of what you would do with them unless you display minatures already.

I figured I'd be getting this game when it goes down in price at some point, but it's not on my priority list. Still, special editions have sold me on running out to buy games before. Thanks for the information, while not paticularly attractive to me, I'm sure there are those out there who would love it.

You sure about it? I remember back when Dawn of War 2 was released, it had similar issue for some of the people. For me it installed perfectly fine, using Steam as an installer, but without the need of downloading anything.

And as for the topic. Curses you. It's still 3 days away in the EU. At least i got me a demo to fool around with and getting used to the whole new control scheme, already enjoying how the combat was improved.

I am very sure. I've checked through the contents of the disk, only finding Steam installers for various languages, DirectX, and some image resources. No matter what I try I can't get the game from the disk to my system since the disk seems to be lacking the game. I've tried putting the disk into the tray and clicking "install", and it just takes me through the Steam install which requires downloading the game. And it gives me no option to use the disk.

Odd, there should be a encrypted file in one of the steam formats i can't recall now. I'd check my DoW2 disc but sadly my dvd drive died some time ago and digital distribution made me too lazy to actually go and buy a new one.

Doesn't seem like there would be a thread about similar issue on the Civ5 official forums.

A 100 bucks? That's what a regular, non-special edition of any new games costs here in Norway... Damn taxation of imported goods...

That demo was awesome. Until it decided to kick you off the planet after the 100th turn.

I actually checked the official forums and couldn't find anything on my problem.

Oh how nice i can buy this book for this price! Oh and what do you know! They are throwing in a game free of charge. Really? They need to throw in a book to make people buy it? Shameful.

As a former Warhammer player I can say miniatures are neat but what's the point of them? Is there a tabletop game to go along with them? I would use them to dominate during my next game of monopoly or gradually become lost as they fall behind my desk.

Art books are neat! You can look at them while you poop or leave them on the coffee table so your friends can notice how hard-core you are about games!

Ergh, yeah I don't really mind Steam, but I wish they'd stop trying to monopolise the entire game's industry :(

Holy shit! Only 50 bucks for a...manual!? How can I resist!?

Seriously, used to be you'd get this for free. Baldur's Gate II practically came with the entire 2.5 D&D rule set, but now we're expected to be excited about it. What a gyp.

Okay, okay, I'm being unfair. All the other stuff sounds nice; I just don't see why anyone would want to lay down that much money for it, no matter how large a fan they are.

The inflation adjusted retail price of the big box version of the original Civ that I bought is something like 85 dollars. That came with a hefty manual and a nice box but didn't have anything like a glossy art book or miniatures. I don't think that this is terrible value, if you want those things. The standard DVD box version of the game is like a budget reissue compared to the original Civ.

Damn thats a pretty neat set, would love to have a copy of the art book. Especially since the "regular" copy of the game gets nothing besides a tech tree and a the most minimal manual possible.
