Ron Gilbert & Tim Schafer Re-Join Forces

Double Fine Productions has just added another big name to its roster: Ron Gilbert.

Attention fans of adventure games: the band is getting back together. Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer are working together again, now that Schafer has hired Gilbert for a project at Double Fine Productions. Both Schafer and Gilbert (along with Telltale's Dave Grossman) are credited with creating the original Monkey Island titles for LucasArts back when the publisher was renowned for its hysterical adventure games.

While it was recently revealed that Double Fine is working on four titles for THQ, Gilber is apparently going to be working on a different project. Exactly what the game will be has yet to be revealed and/or pitched to a publisher. From the sound of it, though, it sounds like it might be an adventure game, though nothing's certain.

Gilbert talked to Kotaku about the new gig, and hinted what might be in the works. "The old adventure games are something that could come back," he said. "The Monkey Island stuff did very well on the iPad and the re-release on XBLA. I think there are a lot of people who really do enjoy that kind of game. I think they really could come back.

"That's not saying I'm making an adventure game."

Gilbert's latest game was <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/1908-DeathSpank-Limbo>Deathspank, the action-RPG recently released for XBLA and PSN by Hothead Games. Hothead's follow-up, Deathspank: Thongs of Virtue, was launched last week. Both Gilbert and Schafer are known for their smart, goofy senses of humor, so I'm excited to see what the two men come up with.

Nothing could have been worse than Brutal Legend. The next game under their collaboration should be awesome...

OMG, awesome!

He and Tim Schafer should work at the same product, maybe they can spark lightning again and produce a modern classic.

4 different projects? I hope Double Fine makes a few smaller games now like the teased Halloween RPG. I think their studio would benefit from the shedule of making smaller, DLable games. I'll buy them if they look as good as the Halloween one.

If anybody can really modernize the adventure genre and keep it smart and funny, it's these guys.
I think Grim Fandango is about due for a modern day HD sequel...

Awesome news. I thoroughly enjoyed the new Monkey island games. However, I do still miss the 2D presentation. I thought "The Curse of Monkey Island" has the best art style out of the whole series. The 3D in the new ones looks kinda cheap.

Back on topic, I hope these two can come up with something new and exciting. As much as I love the classics I've been in the mood for a new adventure game for a while. I'd personally love to see one using the Doraleous characters.

Yeah. The references and jokes were priceless. If the game had even half as much gameplay as style, it'd have been Game of the Year.

Alas, it was not so.
