Catch 'Em All With Your Typing Skills in New Pokemon

Pokemon Typing DS pits you against hundreds of monsters, armed only with a wireless keyboard and your touch-typing skills.

With all of the news pouring out of Japan about the 3DS, it's easy to forget that Nintendo's current handheld will still be around for a little while longer. Today, the publisher unveiled a new Pokemon title for the DS and, well, it is probably the strangest entry in the series since the photography-focused Pokemon Snap. Pokemon Typing DS replaces pokeballs with a keyboard, pitting players against monsters in word-based duels.

Like in previous Pokemon games, you'll take on the role of a young trainer, bobbing and weaving through caves, forests, cities, and beaches in search of every last one of those little creatures. Players will have the chance to face off against hundreds of different Pokemon, ranging from the classics like Pikachu to those new critters from the recently released Black and White games.

The key difference between the standard Pokemon entries and Typing is that you won't be fighting the monsters in turn-based combat. Instead, like in the zombie-themed Dreamcast classic Typing of the Dead, you'll capture Pokemon by typing words until their health drops. The more quickly you type, the more effective your attack is.

Of course, typing on the DS touchscreen can be a bit of a chore. To make your life easier, Nintendo will be packing in a wireless DS keyboard with each copy of the game. No other uses have been announced for the peripheral, but wouldn't it be wonderful if Nintendo allowed it to work with other programs on the handheld?

Pokemon Typing DS will be released in Japan in early 2011. Given the pricey peripheral and the general quirkiness of the title, I wouldn't hold my breath for an overseas release. Hopefully, the thing will be fairly import-friendly, I've been craving something similar to Typing of the Dead for years.

Damn it! Another one that looks doomed to stay in Japan like Typing of the Dead 2!

Sigh.....oh typing tutors. Why does Japan hoard you so?

These kinds of games are great for a laugh, I'm hoping for an overseas release. I'm definitely not banking on it making it to Europe but if it gets as far as America then I'm good.

Aww...It's like Typing of the Dead. But with Pokemon to catch instead of zombies to kill.

And not as funny.

This seems pretty cool

You do know that in Japan there is a HotD game for the DS called English of the Dead? It's like Typing of the Dead, but you write letter-by-letter instead. It features writing calibration, so you can calibrate each letter as well.

I wouldn't get this on the DS, but why can't they just release it for the PC? Someone will probably end up emulating it for the PC anyway so if they did it 1st, they'd get the money.

Hmmm... I want this lol. It's such a stupid awesome concept. If it doesn't make it out of Japan, then hopefully someone emulates it and enables you to use your keyboard. Would be cool.

Give you a clue: What was the last Pokemon game to grace the PC?

Give you another clue: Gamefreaks have a deal with Nintendo. Microsoft won't get a look in, and any indy devs who even look at porting it will get muscled out with the financial firepower that Ninty can bring to the table.

No typing gaming ever will be Typing of the Dead... Unlesss Typing of the Dead 2 is released in English... Granted you could still play it in Japanese, but it loses the humor of getting words like STDs or words all ending in -ion.

Don't forget the horrible voice acting and the lolwut endings :D

I have a bad feeling that the keyboard will be way too small for my fingers. I'll probably only get to half my current GWAM on that thing.

Well as long as your pokemon trainer doesn't wear these...
I'll be okay with the game.

OT: I like this. I think it would be a good way to get kids to practice their typing.

This can only be done in Japan their tiny little fingers flying all over their key boards.

This is what I learned to hate about the pokemon franchise. The way they milk the IP is beyond shameless

Actually, this one is made by Genius Sonority (The studio behind Pokémon Colosseum, Pokémon XD, Pokémon Trozei, and Pokémon Battle Revolution). Also, there was one Pokémon game for the PC... which sucked total ass. And it wasn't official. Anyways, I hope you can use the keyboard with the DSi Browser, and with the DSi Store.

Figures that Japan would release so many typing tutors. The Roman alphabet is not standard for the Japanese, yet it's the standard input for computers, as such, typical typing speeds are horrendously slow. Also a very well timed release. A child-friendly typing game right as the education department drags romaji lessons to the start of the primary school course. There'll be demand.
