Assassin's Creed Facebook Game Interacts with Consoles

Not only can you be a "Facebook Assassin" with Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy, but playing it will unlock items and landmarks in your console game.

According to information released by Ubisoft at a press event in San Francisco, you can create a unique assassin profile in Assassin's Creed: Project Legacy. Your assassin can specialize in any number of disciplines, such as political intrigue or skulking around in shadow. Progression through Legacy will be somewhat linear, with quest rewards needed to unlock even more quests. As you level up, Ubisoft said that you will need more complex items under your control, such as a certain number of soldiers or horses. Legacy launches on Facebook today, but it does not seem to be live yet.

The really interesting bit, and the only detail that seems unique to this type of Facebook game, is the interaction between Legacy and other Assassin's Creed titles. Unlocking landmarks and items in Legacy will open up corresponding items on your console game. Also, playing the single-player game on your console will unlock missions in Legacy

Ubisoft's Chris Early called such interaction "a virtuous cycle," but I was thinking of a different "V" word. I personally have never had very much fun with these kind of Facebook games or "Snore-PGs" as one developer termed them [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_256/7625-A-New-Audience], but I don't think that I am the target audience for Ubisoft's Companion Gaming initiative.

To read more about Ubisoft's plans for more social gaming in the future, check out Steve Butts' report from the press event [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/previews/8166-Ubisoft-Unveils-Companion-Gaming-Initiative] in San Francisco.

I'll wait and see if there is anything worth unlocking. I might play for a few hours if there is...

As long as whatever you get in Legacy is available to get in Brotherhood without NEEDING to play Legacy, I'm fine with this. I don't want to have to play a Facebook game (or go on Facebook at all, for that matter) to keep up with players who use items they got exclusively from Legacy, or do missions in single-player that can ONLY be unlocked by playing Legacy.

To put it simply: KEEP IT OPTIONAL!

A Facebook game I might actually enjoy? IMPOSSIBLE. I only go on Facebook to read what my friends are doing and update my status. Maybe message a few people. The games are usually awful.

I quite agree with this, or do it Halo: Reach style were you unlock a hoodie or something minor but a token of your contribution.

This, I dont want to be forced into using Facebook to get the most out of my game. This isn't fun or interesting, this is just annoying Ubisoft!

I agree.

I like to keep my gaming relatively private - I'm from that odd and short-lived generation for whom gaming was dorky and shameful yet awesome. Making me shout about it on facebook to get the most out of it is unkind.

Fair enough - I'm not playing the next Assassin's Creed then. I had the codex edition pre-ordered as well, I'm sure someone will fill my shoes but I'm getting really sick of this trend where content is with held for publishers to make more of a buck. (In case you can't work it out, there will be a traffic deal in place relating to the game)

I thought Ubisoft was above this.

Do you have to play Legacy through your 360/PS3 for these 'unlockables' to count I wonder. The last thing I want is to connect my 360 to my FB account, MSN is bad enough.
Been playing it a bit, it seems dull but the story ain't bad.

Hmm. I'd say production quality is high, even if actual enjoyment is low. In fact, it's so far a bit like cow-clicker... At least in Farmville (And I can't believe I'm saying this) clicking does different things. In this game I just keep clicking execute until I run out of AP, at which point I go do something more enjoyable (like replaying AC2) until they increase again.

I think they tied this into the console game (and boy does THAT trigger every "Don't go in there, you crazy *****!" paranoid survival instinct I have) just so people would actually play it more than once.

...

(Goes back to clicking 'execute')
