Modders Turn StarCraft 2 Into Survival Horror Game

Abandoned spaceships, flickering lights and a super-spooky atmosphere. No, you've not got the wrong game, it really is Starcraft 2.

Not everyone is into real time strategy games, but with StarCraft 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Starcraft-II-Wings-Liberty-Pc/dp/B000ZKA0J6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286373471&sr=8-1], that doesn't seem to matter. If you don't like RTS games, you can just mod it into something else and the latest mod to do exactly that is Project Vector, a survival horror game set in the StarCraft universe.

As you can probably see from the video, Project Vector is still a work in progress, and has more than a passing similarity to EA's Dead Space [http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Space-Playstation-3/dp/B000X1TC0U/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1286373516&sr=1-1]. The team behind Project Vector - two guys form the SC2Mapster [http://forums.sc2mapster.com/resources/project-workplace/12788-project-vector-tps/#posts] forums - admit that the Dead Space was an inspiration, but don't want to just recreate the game using StarCraft 2. The mod has its own story, but apart from that, details about just what's going on are scarce. The duo plans to release the mod in sections, because they feel it would take too long to make the whole game before making it available.

Project Vector is really a testament to both the pair's skills, and to the versatility of the SC2 Galaxy Editor toolset. Way back when people were still playing the StarCraft 2 beta, someone managed to put together a kart racing game [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100235-Hey-Kids-Are-You-Ready-for-StarCraftKart] in just a day, and it's clearly not taken people long to become more and more adept with the editor. I can't wait to see what people come out with when they've had a year to play with it.

It appears that modders will eventually translate the Starcraft Universe into every single Genre imaginable. I can't wait to see what they do for Platformers.

Buff man in skin tight suit runs in and out of pitch black rooms for 90% of the trailer.

I am so excited!!!!

The lighting a BIT off, even for a horror based game, I'd actually like to see what's actually IN the video.

Besides that, yeah, this looks pretty rad.

There sure was a lot of surviving in that trailer. Not as much horror as I expected but I guess we can't have everything.

Also, I'm sorry, but I won't be able to take this seriously as long as the character has that bouncy walk :)

I've Gotta' hand it to the SC2 Editor, that's a lot of power for an RTS intended tool.

Can I just pretend and call this Starcraft Ghost? (It seriously reminds of that game)
Mods like this are the reason I love Starcraft so much, and the reason I haven't played many ranked games.

That's some cool stuff.

But please, please tell me that they're not going to have a fucking Ghost running around with a flashlight. You know, as opposed to every advanced visual aid available to humanity.

It's a shame this kind of thing isn't viable for multiplayer. A few mappers have tried building TPS's but the latency is just too much for any real gameplay.

That's a damned intimidating gait on the soldier. I suppose if you're going to be running from hordes of flesh-hungry Zerg, you might as well look fabulous doing it.

I'll be impressed when someone uses the engine to make a fighting game.

I love how this is a total conversion of a FPS game that is probably no where near finished and people can still find ways to poke holes in something and not be happy that they might get something free which might actually be decent or better.

That was actually pretty awesome. Just watching it non-full screen gave me the goosebumps. Also, if you think survival horror needs to involve combat, you're doing it wrong.

The goofy running was definitely a turn off though.
