Activision and Silicon Knights Giving X-Men New Destiny

The developer of Eternal Darkness and Too Human is now tackling the X-Men in a new title that gives mutants choices.

Activision and Marvel announced a new X-Men game under development by Silicon Knights today called X-Men: Destiny. Not many concrete details were given, but a trailer and press release seem to indicate that it has RPG elements involving choices.

Players are known to take on the role of a brand new mutant in a "rich, branching storyline that features a deep element of choice," according to Activision. The teaser trailer's narrator alludes to a struggle that will "define" everyone involved, while showing the outlines of characters such as Wolverine, Phoenix, and Cyclops. The narrator then says "every mutant has the freedom to choose his path," and shows Magneto, making it seem as if players will have to choose between joining the forces of good and evil in the game.

The X-Men comic books and movies follow a struggle between Magneto, who wants to destroy humanity for trying to control mutantkind, and the X-Men, who struggle to win over humanity with good deeds. I would guess the game is likely to play off of that general storyline by the hints given.

The trailer makes it seem as if players will be able to choose from at least three types of characters: a strong bruiser, an agile female, and an in-between. Unfortunately, nothing was revealed about X-Men: Destiny as far as gameplay goes other than the aspect of choice, so it could be an MMO, a platformer, or another RPG in the vein of the X-Men Legends [http://www.amazon.com/X-Men-Legends-Playstation-2/dp/B0001I9YHG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286474235&sr=8-1] series for all we know.

Silicon Knights is known for developing Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain for the PlayStation, Eternal Darkness on the GameCube, and the notorious received a $4 million [http://www.amazon.com/Too-Human-Xbox-360/dp/B000R0SS3Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1286475688&sr=1-1] grant in April to make an unannounced triple-A title, and could be it. Though it was believed that a followup to Too Human was in the works, Silicon Knights may seek to get back into the good graces of gamers with the release of X-Men: Destiny instead.

Destiny's flOw [http://www.herohq.com/xmendestiny]. I've made three different types of molecules, but nothing else has happened, so it might not be a source of any new information just yet.

Whatever it it I hope the game play narrative is well done...I am so tired of these ultra simplistic mass marketed games.....

Alright Silicon Knights, you almost ruined it with Too Human. Let's see if you can redeem yourselves.

I'm pretty sure I heard them say "NOT every mutant has the freedom to choose his path" when they showed Magneto. And then followed up with "One does...you" implying that you're special and other, NPCs are locked into their paths.

I don't know, I just seem to have drawn different conclusions from the trailer than the author.

Yay Silicon Knights. Boo Activision.

I seem to be the only person that wants another Too Human game to come out, so I'd rather they were working on that. But I suppose an X-Men game where you AREN'T Wolverine makes for a welcomed change.

I could get behind a concept like that, provided the mechanical execution is anything like what I'm imagining right now based on these wild speculations. Whee!

But seriously, I'd like to see Silicon Knights redeem themselves, especially given their big failure was a premise I would kill to see done correctly - cyberpunk vikings is just an inherently awesome premise that they inexplicably managed to ruin. I mean, it's cyberpunk vikings!

So yes, this has me curious now - curse the almost total lack of real tangible details, curse it I say!

I would love if this was a good game and preferrably an rpg, it would be interesting to have your own unique mutation. And obviously chose to be evil.

But then again it's gonna be made by Silicon Knights and Activision. So it's gonna be a horrible game with poor story and shitty combat that Kotick will make us pay a shitload for it.

I was under the impression their "top secert" project was a horror title, based on some of the comments made by former staff at Fanexpo, mostly during the writers panel. As for this new annoucement, I'm glad to see this studio working on somethign new, Eternal Darkness remains one of my most favorite games, and at least the last I was their, Slicion Knights was full of dedicated, talanted people. I hope they redeem themselves, or better yet, make a bunch of money!

(Because I still wouldn't mind working for em!)

You forgot the part where you need a separate controller and a subscription to play.

I actually found Too Human not that bad.... BUT I remember early on the hype was for choice in that game when there is none story wise. I do not trust Silicon knights when they say a new game made by them will have "choices."

I'm not expecting too much from this honestly. Should I? Most super-hero games are kind of bland in my opinion.

Indeed I did. Thank you kindly for adding that.

More thoughts
I liked too human ya its a bit wonky/esoteric but it tried harder to be a real game than anything made in the last 5ish years.

Also I hope its not another crappy alliance game.... raven you suck......
