LoveFilm Launching PS3 Streaming Service

A YouTube slip up has revealed Sony's plans to bring a movie streaming service to European PS3s.

The U.S. has been enjoying Netflix on its consoles for some time now, but the rest of the world has had to do without. That may be changing however, as Netflix's European cousin, LoveFilm is apparently coming to the PS3 very soon.

The announcement was made very quietly on a YouTube video on the official PS3 channel, but that video has since been removed, suggesting that it went live before it was supposed to. The service would allow LoveFilm subscribers to stream movies via their PS3 and manage their movie and game rental lists. The applicable LoveFilm subscriptions are a little bit more expensive than their Netflix equivalents, between £13 and £19 - or around $20 to $30 - compared with $10 for Netflix, but the LoveFilm unlimited subscriptions allow users to have more discs at once.

Netflix has been a sore subject for some European gamers, because the service gets a lot of attention, but is only available in two countries - the U.S. and Canada. While LoveFilm doesn't cover everywhere in Europe - just the UK, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Norway - it does go some way to evening things out.

Lovefilm? Another service not available in NL. We're still waiting for the digital comics service as well, Sony STILL hasn't managed to get it working.

If they do bring this out it will be a nice touch, just pay a few pounds a month and get over 4000 free movies and TV shows, straight to your PS3.
You will need an account, here is a 2 month free trial which is great for streaming and renting games for PS3 and XBox

That would be cool. Feel free to make a service comparable to Hulu as well, and I might have to buy a PS3.

I know that PS+ users are getting a free trial of Hulu on the PS3, though I think Hulu plans to make it a subscription service upon release.

well it's about time that Europe got some of the US only features. However I have a Lovefilm subscription including web streaming and find that the selection available for streaming is quite poor as is the picture quality. Many of the good films require extra rental fees on top of the subscription and there are only a handful of good films available for free.

Really all they need to do is update the Flash player in the PS3's browser and then you can watch the streaming movies from their website.

I've downgraded my subscription to exclude streaming films.

When I read "LoveFilm" I thought porn was involved, and the thought of watching it on my living room couch (with the blinds fully open, mind you) was an appealing one. Then I read it was just a streaming service with a funny name, and I was disappointed. Not the most insightful post of the day, I realize, but I may as well mention what goes on in the mind of a PS3 owner...
