Gears of War Composer On Life Support - UPDATED

Just a few days after tweeting that he was "roofied" by someone while out for a night on the town, Gears of War [http://www.amazon.com/Gears-War-3-Xbox-360/dp/B002I0H79C/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1286809771&sr=8-3] composer Kevin Riepl is on life support and facing surgery.

On the night of October 5, Riepl, whose credits also include follow-up tweet [http://www.amazon.com/Crackdown-2-Xbox-360/dp/B002BRZ8BQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286809798&sr=8-1], "Something's effed up. Like literally. Something knocked me out."

Then things took a turn for the bizarre. By 9:57 that evening, Riepl was in the hospital. An MRI came back negative and Riepl seemed in good spirits, tweeted [http://twitter.com/kevinrieplmusic/status/26615117577], "kevin is still sedated while on life support but was more responsive to family in the room."

There's been no word yet as to what the cause of Riepl's sudden illness could be, but he's scheduled to undergo surgery tonight. All of us here at The Escapist extend our best wishes and hopes for a speedy recover to Riepl and his family.

UPDATE: Riepl's wife tweeted [http://twitter.com/kevinrieplmusic/status/27109055927] this morning that he made it through surgery but will remain under heavy sedation for the next 24 hours. "he pulled through surgery...did i not tell you he was a FIGHTER? :)" she wrote. "just want to thank all of you again for your kind words, prayers & thoughts for my husband. it means more to me than you'll ever know."

I do not care that he was a composer or anything for video games...all I see is another human is serious trouble.

Get well Kevin. Will be praying for you.

I hope everything works out alright. Good luck Mr. Riepl. Here's hoping you're as tough as the guys in the games you've helped create!

I hope Mr Riepl will get better soon. I'm just kind of shocked that this has happened to him.

I can relate to this, because my mom came home late one night passed out on the floor. A friend of hers called the house and woke me up, told me she wasn't answering her cell. I'll never forget seeing my mom out cold on the floor. I then spent the rest of the night at the hospital until my grandmother showed up. I went home and stayed awake until 5 a.m.

Best of luck to the guy, and I sincerely hope he pulls through.

My thoughts and prayers to go him. The soundtrack for Gears was one of the best parts of the game.

On the one hand I am saddened at the possibility of someone dying, not gonna cry about it, just a generally sad thing. But moreso I would hate to see an artist go, as the works of an artist can ripple through the industry, possibly inspiring more great works to come.

My prayers go out to him. I might not have played Gears of War, but I know that all composers for games are good, and I wish him the best of luck and hope that he gets the chance to compose once more.

Well I wish him the best of luck. Hate to see a hard working and talented composer go to waste. Not just that but its another life ended.

I would make a gears joke about someone running up to him and pressing the X button to revive him but it would be in too bad of taste. I'm a big fan of the Gears of War series and I'm a fan of this man's work. Though I hadn't heard of him until today, I recognise his work.
