Warcraft's Cataclysm Begins Today

The world of Warcraft gets a major shakeup today, as Patch 4.01 heralds the beginning of the Cataclysm.

The release of A Blizzard post on the WoW forums [http://www.amazon.com/World-Warcraft-Cataclysm-Pc/dp/B002I0HKIU/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1286920054&sr=1-1] announced that maintenance would begin today for the release of Patch 4.01 - the patch that kicks in the Cataclysm changes before Cataclysm actually comes out.

The full patch notes can be found here [http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/patchnotes/test-realm-patchnotes.html], but really, here's all you need to know: Patch 4.01 will add Reforging vendors in all cities who can customize the stats on your armor. (You weren't using any of that Spirit anyway, were you?) It will implement all of the Cataclysm talent tree changes, which means that everybody is going to spend the next month and a half working out which class is now the most overpowered.

Perhaps coolest of all, though, is that Patch 4.01 implements the new Cataclysm Launcher, the new patch system that will actually let you stream and patch data while you're still logged in to Azeroth. True, there's something oddly ironic about needing to take the game offline for a full day in order to patch in a system that will let you patch the game without having to take it offline, but eh, I'm not going to complain.

It's the end of the world as we know it, people - and I'm pretty damn psyched. Why not check out our Cataclysm coverage [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/tag/cataclysm] while the patch is downloading?

As much as I'm looking forward to the new mechanics being implemented today (or tomorrow if the servers crap themselves and die) I'm not really that excited for it. New talents and stuff is great and all but beyond that all you really have for another 3 to 4 weeks is just a hand full of quests relating to the upcoming cataclysm and the occasional attack on SW or Org by the elemental plane. I'll be much happier when 4.0.3 comes out and lets you explore the revamped zones and make new class/race combos minus the 2 new races.

I love the new way to patch the game. I got to see it in action during the Beta and it worked out nicely for me. I am also interested in checking out how people are going to react to the talent tree changes. It not really going to affect me since I've seen/played with it already. :) This is going to be a fun day.

I used to play WoW until around the time Ulduar launched. I admit it is very tempting to get back into it with Cataclysm (I always wanted to make a goblin) but looking back I realize this game had an overall negative impact on my life and I've vowed never to get back into it.

But damn those goblins. Damn them...

Dammit. I had just stopped playing WoW for the sake of my schooling and such, promising to get back in when Cat drops... looks like it's a scroll of rez for me...

Heh, kidding, kind of. Certainly won't stop me from sacrificing ten gigs of space to redownload it tonight :D

I await the new Azeroth with a sharp blade and strong armor. Come with all your fury, Deathwing, and your Old God masters!

Am I the only one that feels that a year or so later from now Blizzard will announce Warcraft 4 and just write World of Warcraft's history as some sort of alternate non-canon timeline. Or worse, a dream?

The front page of MMO-Champion [http://www.mmo-champion.com] has all there is to know about the patch in a really, really, really huge and detailed post. The website may or may not be overloaded right now.
