Question of the Day, November 7, 2010

Last week, Google's vice president of geographic and local services Marissa Mayer - the first female engineer the company ever had - shared her thoughts on the internet giant's three biggest mistakes [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105025-Googles-20th-Employee-Lists-The-Companys-Three-Biggest-Mistakes]. Which do you think was the biggest?

Their biggest mistake? Not treating their employees like dirt!

HAVE YOU SEEN HOW PAMPERED THEIR EMPLOYEES ARE?

Make them live off of dirt, get whips, make them toil!

Releasing GMail on April Fools' Day sounds like a dumb thing to do, but it also sounds like a funny thing to do.

While Wave didn't take off it was still an interesting technology which is what Google built their business on so I wouldn't say that was a huge mistake. I would probably say the Buzz privacy issue was their biggest.

I say altering their algorithms to lower, if not almost remove their links to places which damage their political views.

Example: Taking down the link that led to the MoveOn.org advertisement where they were calling General Petraeus "General Betray Us" because Obama appointed him to lead the war in Iraq.

You can still get to it, but Google won't take you there.

I don't care what your political views are, don't change your search engine because of them :(

The little instant messaging service on the side of my GMail page. What is that? Why would I want to use it?

This. Good thing this shit can be turned off.

I'm not too fond of them completely changing how the results for Google Images are displayed. AND they need to stop fucking around with YouTube and changing it every three months. >.<

Blocking websites from appearing on google when you search for them (which pretty much is the same as detaching your website from the internet entirely) with the justification that they contain childporn when they in actuality contain none whatsoever.

Messing with copyright laws by uploading complete books. Seriously, who thought that they would get away with that?

Google Wave = great idea. Sadly they just went about it completely wrong and made it too clunky (for example, it would have been nicer just to make it like a tab in your gmail so you didnt have to get friends to sign up again just to use it with you, or sign into a seperate app even).

Thankfully they've already confirmed they're cutting their losses for now but it would be nice to see it rebooted in the future with a fresh rebuild.
