I'm the New Guy.

You can tell by the way I keep walking right by the elevator, asking how to find the snack machine and getting lost on the way to lunch. I got my keys to the washroom on Wednesday - my third day. Before that, I had to sneak around the back way and get funny looks from the banker-type people with whom we share office space just to take a ... (I resisted making a Nintendo joke. But yes, it was hard). There are no pictures on the wall of my cube, the space around my desk is painfully litter-free and the box of toys I brought from home has barely been played with, much less looked at.

In short, in spite of the fact that I've been gifted with the opportunity to work at perhaps the coolest gaming mag on the intarweb, no amount of cool can overcome the inevitable awkwardness of being new.

But here's the thing: aside from the terrible embarassment of having to ask (for the third time) how one would find a grocery store, I've yet to really feel like the new guy.

There's something about gamers. Or, perhaps just these gamers. We share the same interests, dream the same dreams and work towards the same goals. I may be from a strange place, have kooky ideas and deep, dark secrets, but at The Escapist, an office full of gamers, I've been treated like family. Since Day One.

It is impossible to overstate the absolute joy to be had by walking into a room for the first time and feeling as if one belonged there. I think that as gamers and thinking individuals, a lot of us spend our lives searching for that feeling. I have it now. I look forward to sharing it with you through my work in the weeks ahead.

I felt the same way going into the gaming club I joined at my college (primarially table-top roleplay, although it does branch out a bit to more generic games). The experience is not like any of the other clubs or groups I have been a part of, especially when compared to outreach clubs that try their hardest to make people feel accepted.

I've always wondered why.

Russ, to me, you'll always be just another old guy.

Good people usually create good things, so I suppose it's no surprise that the folks who make the Escapist have made you feel so much at home. Glad to hear you've nestled in so nicely. Still, I hope they get that whip a-cracking soon enough. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your stuff.

I think that the phenomenon you are experienceing is common to all gamers, or at least all gamers who are old enough to have serious jobs. There is a camaraderie, an understanding, a shared culture that causes them to be eminently accepting of others, and the places where they congregate seem to often be places where a gamer feels welcome. Glad to hear that the Escapist is no different.

I'm looking forward to the unique perspective you will no doubt bring to the Escapist, Russ!

Can we expect the re-kindling of the Escapist podcast now? Loved the GWJ Radio, would like to see you continue that but would gladly see you use your experience there towards putting on an Escapist podcast.

Russ man, you are living the dream. I can't imagine getting paid to write relatively freely about what you love. Furthermore, it sounds like you are surrounded by folks who share in the dream. Keep it up, 'cause you are giving a youngin' some hope that it can be done. I know that I am not alone in wishing you the best of luck!

I was standing over him when he wrote this, like he was a South American dictator announcing his retirement for "health reasons." ;)

It is impossible to overstate the absolute joy to be had by walking into a room for the first time and feeling as if one belonged there.

I get that feeling whenever I descend belowground. You know: basements, caves, labyrinths, and the like. It's the strangest thing.
