Black Ops Blows Up UK Launch Records

Not only did Activision's shooter outsell all games in the UK last week, it made last week the highest grossing in the region's videogame history.

We know that Call of Duty: Black Ops had a pretty good week. It broke launch day records in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom by grossing a combined $360 million in both regions by selling 5.6 million copies [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105215-Black-Ops-Beats-MW2-in-Launch-Day-Sales] on the first day that it was available. That great day of sales was followed by four more and Black Ops ended the week making £81.9 million (that's $131.5 million) by selling over 2 million copies in the U.K. alone. That figure beats out Modern Warfare 2 by 13 percent in terms of unit sales and 21 percent in pure earnings.

GFK Chart-Track also reports that last week was the highest grossing in the history of videogames in the UK, with £113.8 million in sales. That figure beat out the previous record-holder at £107.6 million for the last week of sales in 2008 (when Call of Duty: World at War was on shelves.

Of course, Microsoft's launch of Kinect had something to do with those high numbers, as Kinect Sports, Ubisoft's Motion Sports and Dance Central were all in the top 15 of highest-grossing titles in the U.K.

Yep, it was a good week for videogames.

All to their on and all but I feel like it really doesn't deserve it, it's an OK game I guess but I don't feel it deserves it.
Meh, not as if the games I like will disappear...

I never thought anything would beat the previous record, And yet again I am proven wrong. Maybe something else will come next year and gross to a larger amount. I would be even more surprised.

Well if people like it, they'll buy it. Can't really call it a shitty game with numbers like these, apperantly alot of people disagree, or disagreed.

Dont worry, they will only manage this so many times. Notice how more and more people stop playing the game the more releases of it their are -- However, enough new players pitch in to even it out.

The people who like it are publicized, but those who turncoat on it are not

The game isn't fantastic by any means, but its Call of Duty. People will buy it(much like I did) and will play it regardless. The multiplayer is still top-notch in my opinion. The single player is...just filler as far as that goes since its not anything spectacular. The numbers are really something to behold though.

I am happy for them. They have always seem to have been regarded as the other CoD developer, so for them to break all records it is a good week for them.

Yeah, I supposed it is your game if you fancy a cup of tea like that. Whole games point is really the multi-player now days so.--

Pretty amazing really. Against controversy it still sells. Take that anti-gaming media?

I don't think it is a good day for video games, more like good days for Bobby Kotick's now diamond lined pockets.

Although, I have to say those are impressive numbers. Yes ut's people just riding the hype from last year mainly along with a bunch that missed out but I'll give them credit for those mumbers.

And I predict Darth Kotick is writhing naked in a pool filled with pound coins right now...
He doesn't not have time for that, he has to carefully plan his next move to piss off gamers everywhere.

Indeed, this is the first time a new video game has been the talk at my school.

It's pretty cool.

Launch records are just cold, hard quantitative facts. They're completely devoid of opinions about the quality (or lack thereof) of the games.

The game does deserve the launch record because it sold more units than any other game on launch, that's a fact and can't be changed.

I don't care for the game either, but I don't begrudge it having the launch record because that's the reality of the situation, however I might start to get a bit uppity if it beats Red Dead Redemption for Game Of The Year.

And how can you know if people like it? In this case people are buying a game only because it is so hyped. There is no demo of any sort available, so you are pretty much buying a "surprise".

And why is there no demo? Because the sales would be much lower, if people actually had a chance to try the game out in person.

Well i had a chance to try it (SP), and it sucked to be honest. I don't even know why they call it a shooter and an action game, because all i mostly had to do is walk 1min along the very narrow corridor, followed by yet another long animation.

OK maybe MP is better, but i will never know, because i sure won't spend any money on this overhyped POS.

And how do you know if people like it because it overhyped? Alot of people loved MW2's Multiplayer and in many cases single player as well. I loved infamous, so you'll see me buying infamous 2, whether or not I see any previews, demos, etc available. If people like a franchise or a series of games, they're likely to buy the next.

I enjoyed the game to be honest, but even though I rented it first, I still bought it within that first week of sales due to my genuine enjoyment of the game. You can't really say either way, but if someone like a franchise, they'll buy the next one.

*looks at the amount of these games our store actually sold. Looks at the dozens left in storage.*

I sense shenanigans somewhere.
