280 Hour Commodore 64 RPG Coming Out This Year

Commodore 64 RPG Newcomer boasts 20 years of development time and a ton of retro gameplay.

One of the biggest RPGs to come out this year will also be one of the smallest. A group of programmers and artists that began work on a Commodore 64 RPG called Newcomer back in 1990 have kept it alive for 20 years, and hope to release it in 2010.

When the Commodore 64 fell out of commercial viability in 1994, Newcomer's creators weren't sure what to do with it. Thanks to the online community of C64 revivalists that sprang up, they kept developing the game and released a version in 2001. However, it was bug-ridden, the text had readability issues, and it wasn't well balanced. Development resumed, and the "Ultimate" version of Newcomer is planned to come out as donationware before the year's end on the C64, PC, Mac, and Linux.

Newcomer's developers say it provides anywhere from 70-280 hours of entertainment, but it only takes up 2MB of space. It may boggle your mind to learn just how much content has been shoved into those 2MB. The game has 180 NPCs to interact with, more than 10 members that can join your 6-person party, 50 areas to explore, 100 cutscene graphics, 130 items, 180,000 words of in-game text, thousands of puzzles, many endings, non-linear gameplay that requires multiple playthroughs to see everything, and various game modes including the challenging solo mode. 2MB went a long way in the days of the C64.

Newcomer appears to transport the main character from the future to a strange location where he's the "newcomer." To survive, you'll have to gain the respect or fear of other party members as you journey through various locations, changing clothes/armor when necessary, picking door locks or just blowing them apart, and collecting as much information as you can. Screenshots show battles with giant bears, rats, and riot police holding shotguns, so there's apparently a wide variety of enemies to fight too.

It looks like Newcomer will have a lot of depth for anybody that likes hardcore RPGs and doesn't mind retro graphics and gameplay. Maybe it's because I grew up playing C64 games, but I think there's something to be said for the blocky art style that was used back then. Whether or not Newcomer will keep my attention as far as the game goes will have to wait until it's released, but my retro switch has definitely been hit, big time.

Why can't people work on SNES games still?

Seriously, the SNES will always be my retro console of choice, and quite frankly, I'm wishing for some gad-damn support!

So..... Fallout New Vegas is 12Gigabytes, and offers around 50-100 hours of gameplay.

And this is 2mb, and offers minimum of 70 hours?

I'm not even going to try and work out the ratio.....

But I don't mind some old graphics, and it takes up 0.0001% of the space of FNV. So, more spare hard-drive space, and I can probably play this on my crummy old laptop with a 20gb hard-drive.

This, will, be, awesome.

Move over Duke Nukem. We have some REAL vaporware to release.

This is how you do vaporware folks. Although, I can't imagine that this is a good investment for anyone, it's a friggin' game that took 20 years to make and they didn't do any engine changes for better hardware.
This isn't quite so bad vaporware as Duke Nukem. After all, this didn't put out millions of "Leaked" photos, trailers, teasers and magazine articles.

I'm going to need to sort out burning C64 games onto 5 1/4" from Windows 7.

There's no way I'm playing this through an emulator.

The rise of "epic graphix" and voice acting does have its drawbacks.

OT: Well this sure is interesting, I'm totally going to check it out.

I was and am still amazed at what developers could pull off when they had such a limited color palette to work with, as well as processing power and storage space that would be considered nonexistent by today's standards. I cut my teeth on games like Starflight, Wasteland and the early Ultimas, and there was more gameplay in those tiny amounts of data than in a lot of the vast, but shallow seas of todays games.

120 megabytes per hour for New Vegas, more like 10 kilobytes per hour for this, although it's silly to use math as if you only need 120 specific megabytes for a given hour of New Vegas.

Here's something else to chew on: The first patch for New Vegas was over 2 megabytes, and didn't come close to fixing all of the problems with the game.

Hmmmm(Strokes beard) I think we are going to need a calculator for this.

Oh, and too quote Donut from Rvb : "Dude, you just got burned. BURNED DUDE!!! Burned!!" (Substitute Dude for something more appropriate)

20 years of development....

They could have built the Great Pyramid of Giza in that time.

Or perhaps a lovely Death Star.

Nonetheless, my C64 Emulator's going to get a workout for sure now ^.^

20 years of development, and it actually sounds like they were actually working on it that whole time, as opposed to twidling their thumbs with a generic FPS.

im not to worried about it being too retro, i still play quite antiquated titles; looking forward to possibly the jesus christ of RPGs; 70-280 hours? thats what im talking about.

Yeah, I'm going to play this when it's released. Old graphics be damned, if they put this much effort into creating such a profound game, it's worth a look at the very least.

They should port it to XBLA or XBLIG at the least.
im going to be honest here. I doubt the Xbox crowd is the right audience for that kind of game.
Also you have topay alot of money to microsoft to get your game approved. (testing etc. they don't want it to brick Xboxes or contain something that hurted Microsofts public image)
And aren't allowed to release it for free. + Games get buried really fast. or are buried from the beginning in case of xblig.
