No Sarcophagus for Stargate Resistance

It looks like three from a zat for Stargate Resistance [http://www.stargateresistance.com/], as Cheyenne Mountain has stopped selling the game and announced that the servers will be going offline on January 15, 2011.

The tale of Stargate's foray into the realm of videogames is long and murky. More than two years ago, returned [http://www.stargateworlds.com/] earlier this month.

But that seemingly happy ending to a messy situation is evidently too little, too late to do anyone any good. A message posted on the Stargate: Resistance website indicates that the game will be gone for good in January. "On November 16, 2010, the License Agreement between Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, Inc. and MGM Interactive, Inc. expired," it says [http://www.stargateresistance.com/index.php?p=news&NewsID_=217&Limit_=-1&Template_=news-page-template]. "As a result, Cheyenne will no longer be able to offer Stargate Resistance for sale to new customers." On the upside, the servers are being maintained until January 15, 2011, to give Stargate fans who did buy the game a chance to squeeze in as much of it as they can before everything goes dark.

What this means for Stargate Worlds isn't yet known, as Cheyenne Mountain founder Gary Whiting, who was ousted as CEO amid allegations of shenanigans, said the Resistance license was separate from Worlds, although at the time he apparently meant to reassure everyone that Resistance would be alright because it wasn't part of the Worlds train wreck. A die-hard optimist might suggest that this isn't necessarily the end of the line for Cheyenne and the Stargate games: Whiting was "cautiously optimistic" that he'd be able to renegotiate the license with MGM after he took back control of the game and the closure message ends with a promise of "more information as it becomes available." It's also impossible to overlook the remarkable resilience of Cheyenne Mountain, which was reportedly having trouble paying its employees as far back as December 2008 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/87961-Stargate-Worlds-Developer-Running-Out-Of-Money].

On the other hand, emails sent to Dark Comet [http://www.cheyenneme.com/] divisions all bounced. That's generally not a good sign.

because the game went into development before SGU
When I say The Stargate Universe I mean....the universe of Stargate, SG-1, SGA, SGU, and the movies

I was a huge Stargate Fan, I use to watch it with my kids, then Universe came out and no more Stargate for me. Thanks for ruining the franchise.

I was also part of the small group of beta testers(Friends and Family Alpha) who actually got to play Stargate Worlds. There were ton of problems with Stargate Worlds. First off Cheyenne Mountain main investor was a real estate mogul who lost his fortune in the housing bubble(so much for being a mogul)

Second they didn't have a large enough or experienced enough staff to pull off an MMO. They had a couple legends in the industry, but most of the staff was straight out of college with no real world experience, they went as cheap as they could.

Third, although they had a good story and good IP to work from the game play mechanics weren't as fun as the designers had hoped. The stats and skills were a nightmare for a player to pick up and learn.

Because you're not a member of the <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Stargate-Fan-Club>Escapist Stargate Fan Club!

Speaking of the SCFC I just herd about this story and The Escapist Ninja'd me. I've got to stop going to work.

It's actually quite a good game. I didn't play it much because that's not really my Genre of choice, but it was a good adaptation of the Universe. And the first ever game based on the Stargate TV Show ever actually released (except some crappy mobile phone game). Shame to see it go :(

Ah man, I bought Resistance when it first came out... What a sad day it is when corporate issues prevent people from enjoying a well made game...Shame on those greedy corporations! SHAME

I only joined the SG club here, but I'd found about it fairly recently through either Wikipedia or the Stargate Wiki. No idea why I came across it, but it piqued my interest.

A shame I only heard about it like a month ago tops.

The last game I knew about was SG-1: The Alliance, which looked promising but got killed. SGW was actually advertised on one of the sets or something, so I knew about it, but since that never manifested....

Man, I'd love to see a good Stargate game.

Ouch. I know what my code looked like straight outta uni... don't think you could really make a decent game out of that.

Same as a few others - never heard of the game, which is a bit of a surprise to me. I'm not a big stargate fan or anything, but if I heard of it, I'd probably have kept tabs on it, to see if it turned into anything. Looks like it didn't lol.
