Guillermo del Toro's Insane Announced Insanely Early

[gametrailers=708357]

Guillermo del Toro's horrifying first foray into videogames has been revealed, but it still has a long way to go.

Guillermo del Toro's videogame team-up with THQ is currently producing a title called Insane which was recently revealed at the 2010 Spike TV Video Game Awards. When I say revealed, I mean the game now has a trailer that let us know its title.

As Red Faction: Guerrilla [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103876-Guillermo-del-Toro-Making-a-Horror-Game].

It also won't be out until 2013 at the earliest. The trailer definitely gives you the idea that Insane will be something horrifying, including all of the staples of terror like weird bugs, someone's random teeth, voices crying out in terror, and a needle about to go into a human eye. However, it's possible that none of this imagery relates to what Insane will become, because it's at least two years away from release.

Rumors have said that Insane would be revealed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105230-Rumor-Guillermo-del-Toro-Developing-Interdimensional-RPG-Epic] at the VGAs so some wires may have gotten crossed there for all we know. I'm not sure whether to be excited about Insane or not, because technically all we have to go on is a name, and the concept of "horror."

Judging by title alone, I could guess that Insane will take cues from Pan's Labyrinth [http://www.amazon.com/Eternal-Darkness-Sanitys-Requiem-GameCube/dp/B00005Q8M4] proved that del Toro has the ability to come up with some very creepy stuff, so mixed with player interaction his ideas are likely to generate something totally messed up along the same lines.

Is everything supposed to be skewed slightly, or is that my PC messing up?
Anyway, looks.. like nothing. Tentacles and screams. Im not saying it will be bad, THQ are one of my favourite publishers, but I can't make a decision based on this.

2013 is so far away that I have a hard time getting excited about anything that far in the future. Overall this means that the game probably isn't even in early alpha, and that makes the annoucement and the trailer kind of pointless to me.

But then again it's rapidly getting to the point where I feel that anything short of actual gameplay footage is a waste of time. Anyone can whip out an interesting cinematic, and truthfully such footage has nothing to do with the game itself or how it works.

It's interesting, since I think horror is a neglected genere, and it's nice to know someone is developing horr games still, but other than that this doesn't strike me as being paticularly noteworthy.

What's more, as games are their own medium I do not think someone's abillity to write novels, make movies, or do comic books mean much when it comes to game design. I've seen plenty of projects where people have attached their names to games that have blown chips, or been very mediocre.

To put things into perspective, "Clive Barker" has a much better horror record than Del Toro does. "Pan's Labyrinth" was neat, but Clive has written tons of successful books, and his ideas launched one of the most iconic horror franchises out there (even if he was only responsible for the first one). Yet when it comes to video games we've seen "Undying" which became something of a cult classic, and "Jericho" which was a general failure though the ideas DID also inspire a bit of a following (while it's since been closed, it's one of the few games on Gamefaqs that generated a sperate Role-Playing board). If Clive hasn't been able to produce an "OMG, it's incredible" blockbuster horror game, I can't see Del Toro doing much better.

YAWN. Let me know when we hear more about that rumored James Cameron/Del Toro team up to make The Mountains of Madness.

Hmm... this could be taking a look at eventually... as long as Del Toro listens to the advice that he gets at THQ. Videogames just can't work in the same way as films.

You've clearly not seen Del Toro's movies away from Hell Boy and Pan's Labyrinth.

In fact, many people only knows both of these films, but belive me, he knows this stuff, he knows how to make horror. He may not make horror like Clive Barker, but also Clive Barker doesn't do horror the same way as Stephen King. Guillermo's horror is a lot more psichological than visceral and to me that means quite a lot.

Clearly you haven't seen Cronos, Mimic or El Espinazo del Diablo (Devil's Backbone), all of those films always touch horror in a very subtle way and all of them are very psichological, if not visceral, with Mimic being the only exception, as that film is the nearest he's made with lots of blood and gore, I even consider that movie as his only traditional "monster horror" movie.

I recommend you to see all of these movies, but maybe you're not interested at all, that's fine by me, but saying that Guillermo doesn't have any kind of experience with horror stuff, then you're clearly wrong, in fact, you're dead wrong.

And yes, despite that the trailer doesn't show anything at all, color me excited about this.

.....Yay?

It's cool del Toro's doing what I assume will be a horror game, but I know nothing about it. So, hooray?

I think you mean breaking the fourth wall.

OT: I guess I agree with most people here that this trailer doesn't get me excited about the game. Guillermo del Toro isn't a name that would sell me on a horror game either. I've only seen pan's labyrinth and that to me didn't seem scary and I thought in general it wasn't a very good movie. A cool looking game play video would probably change my mind but it seems like it's a year or so away.

I look forward to more info on this, though the trailer is nothing, and the announcement was anticlimactic. It was amusing watching the VGA's when del Toro set up the preview, after it ended you could tell the audience wasn't sure if that was all there was. The collective reaction was "uhh...." *slow clap* As if to say, "we respect your awesomeness so we won't point out how stupid that was."

He could have made two Hobbit movies before Insane sees the light of day.

I think your missing my point. I didn't say he had no horror experience, and your right he's done several movies. What I said was that he's not a horror creator on the same level as Clive Barker who has written a ton of differant stuff, of differant styles. Stories like "Weaveworld" and "Coldheart Canyon" for example are a bit differant in style from "The Hellbound Heart" which was the novella that was turned into Hellraiser. Clive Barker's short story "The Forbidden" (I believe that was the title) was used as the inspiration for the "Candyman" movies, although the movies were substantially differant from the story which had a somewhat differant point (people with nothing actually worshipping this thing that was killing them off, because dying to him made them part of the legend and gave their existance a sort of meaning... you'd have to read it).

The point is that while he could prove me wrong, I'm hardly all that impressed with his name being attached to a horror project, especially seeing as more experienced and dedicated creators have tried to make the jump from books and movies to video games and failed. That's all.

Could they be any more of a tease with this // Granted the game is still not even in preproduction but still // This is just mean // But the one thing that we can take from this is the simple fact that it will introduce something new into the gaming world

This trailer made think as if Yog Shoggoth was being casted by Guillermo del Toro... can you imagine that?

i wonder what an "epic RPG" with a horror setting would be like... call of cthulhu like kind of game maybe?
