Bavaria Rejects Dead Space 2 Rating

The German state of Bavaria has rejected the USK rating of R18+ for Dead Space 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Space-2-Collectors-Playstation-3/dp/B0047ODJAI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1293244826&sr=8-4] on the PSP, meaning the game must be examined for the sixth time before it can be cleared for sale in the country.

Germany is notoriously strict with videogame ratings. Games like USK [http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Black-Ops-Xbox-360/dp/B003JVKHEQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293244952&sr=8-1] rating vetoed by the Bavarian government.

The translated report [http://translate.google.bs/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=de&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcgames.de%2FDead-Space-2-PC-218725%2FNews%2FDead-Space-2-Bayern-will-Release-stoppen-Electronic-Arts-startet-Gegenpetition-805385%2F] on the German site PC Games is a bit tough to put together but it appears that the Bavarian Ministry of Social Services gave Dead Space 2 on the PSP the thumbs down, overriding the ruling of the USK. No specific reason for the rejection was given, although the report notes that a previous test version of the game was turned down because players could injure each other with friendly fire in the multiplayer mode; the German version of the game will apparently have friendly fire removed.

petition [http://www.ea.com] calling on gamers to express their opinions and support the release of the game.

Dead Space 2 is slated for release on January 25 for the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PSP.

Seriously? If I was them, I'd just tell Germany to screw off and stop releasing violent games there.

This is what people like Micheal Atkinson DREAM about.

We need to put a f*cking stop to this crap.

Realy? I mean come on, get that stick out of your ass. Maybe I could understand the console versions, but the portable version? Really?

On another note, what the hell? When did they announce a PSP version? That threw me off the most when I opened this article. I don't think i should have any high expectations for it, doesn't look like the kind of game that could survive the potable transition.

Well there are some kills in Dead Space that are actually pretty nasty... but certainly not worth a ban.

And I doubt even more that you could actually see the kills on a PSP... or that they could even render stuff like that. And I had no idea there would be a PSP version...

This is actually one of the more reasonable cases of censorship.
Even games like Team Fortress 2 or Counter Strike Source are censored in Germany. I even had to import Goldeneye 64 (yes, an N64 game!), because it was never released in Germany.

It's madness. We are allowed to drive 250km/h on the motorway, prostitution is legal, drinking age is 16, but adults are not allowed to play video games.

I'd have told them to bugger off after the second denial. It's high time to just stop selling games there. If the fans want it, they'll import it.

People who are saying that they should stop releasing (violent) games in Germany should consider that Germany has a population of over 80 million. That is a huge market. That would be like cutting off over a quarter of the United States.

I don't really understand how the German/Bavarian government can reject a game that has already been given an 18+ rating. Above 18, everybody should be able to decide whether they want to play it for themselves. And what do they expect to gain from examining it yet again? Is there an even higher rating? And what is so offensive about friendly fire anyway?

Wait, is that a rule for every game in Germany?

Friendly fire? That is what caused this? What kind of idiots run the Bavarian government?

They're in arms about friendly fire being on. So shooting alien infected babies is fine, but shooting what looks like a robot isn't? Ratings boards confuse me...

I'm not sure, it may be the difference between a suggestion and law, or between rating and ban or something.

And I'm guessing the problem with friendly fire is the liberal dismemberment that comes with Dead Space + actual human characters rather than necromorphs.
