Fallout 3 Gets the 8-Bit Demake Treatment

Get ready for some 1980s-style post-nuclear pixellation in Bethesda's official Fallout 3 [http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-3-Game-Year-Xbox-360/dp/B001REZLY8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294085036&sr=8-1] 8-Bit JRPG Demake.

I don't really "get" the Bethesda's [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100724-What-If-StarCraft-Had-Come-Out-In-1984] 8-bit JRPG demake of Fallout 3 goes way over my head, but I'm still having fun poking around inside it.

It's not easy conversing with people or battling Super Mutants in an utterly foreign language but it does engender a certain atmosphere of exploration and a real feeling of accomplishment when whatever you're doing appears to pay off in one way or another. Seeing an old-school, top-down map of the Capital Wasteland is pretty cool too. The site also includes a tour of the world of Fallout, although like the game itself, it's probably a lot more fun if you speak the language.

It can wear thin pretty quickly but I suppose it's possible that what really matters here isn't playability but authenticity. After all, as Bethesda Bethsoft.com [http://bethblog.com/index.php/2011/01/03/the-official-fallout-new-vegas-japanese-rpg-demake/] and give it a click. So what say you, JRPG fans? Do we have a winner?

I must play this, but only because I want to see a 8-bit JRPG version of my hometown.

Really the only thing I loved in Fallout 3.

You got Fallout in my Dragon Warrior.
You got Dragon Warrior in my Fallout.

I guess the only difference is that in this version, every freak with an oversized head isn't some crazed mutant you need to destroy.

8-bit demake? not my thing.
JRPG? not my thing.
Language that isn't English? not my thing.
Free fallout?....oh god dammit, thanks bethesda, I'm now googling a translation guide for this thing. English version or GTFO?

"A Super Mutant appears! What will you do?"

Pretty obvious.

The commands are: "Aim for the head", "Aim for the arm", and so on.

I would get this but the fact that its in Japanese is a dealbreaker for me, I don't want to have to translate my games in order to have fun playing them.

I dont believe that the game is supposed to be played. Yeah, its a game, but the main idea is what the game would look like if it came out in the 8-bit generation, you can understand it without playing it.

If that is the case could they not have achieved the same effect with a few pictures instead?

Is this what their coders were doing instead of fixing bugs?

(Credit where credit is due, that was paraphrased from Russ Pitts' twitter)

two things:

First this is what is different between Obsidian and Bethesda, for better or worse.

Secondly: I guess this makes a decent bit of propaganda for the Japanese market?

So Bethesda released a post-nuclear game in a country that was nuked twice.
My guess is that this is the only 'game-engine' where they can make a stable release that can run without lag nor bug.

Haha, you know, I didn't even make the connection till you mentioned it.
Guess we can blame the success of Hello Kitty, and Japanese game shows on jet addiction.

How can it be a JRPG if it's made by a Western dev?
Because JRPG is a style as much as a description of origin. Just like you can make a show in the style of Anime outside of Japan.
