Just going to mention that the decade ran from 2000-2009. The decade is determined by the second last number, no one called 1990 the 80's.

On a more related note that was a very bizarre article one which even as a commited RPG playing nerd freaks me out. I dont play DnD though so I dont think I will be as affected by the massive shift in culture as other RPGers in fact likely my games will be shifted to a new niche where we are mocked by the now popular DnD crowd.

Happy New Year.

What a beautiful dream. I am, however, taking you at your word for the 2013 release date of your book. Let me know when I can pre-order it.

You are conventional, but not correct.

Heh. I particularly liked the line about Twilight fans not being able to understand the rules to their game, but I suppose I'm bashing on a dead, multi-million dollar horse at this point.

Only on The Escapist does an article featuring a naked girl laying on a Satanic altar lead to a debate about the calendar. :-|

My bet... somehwere in this decade we will see ShadowRun 5th edition... maybe for 2012 to fit with the awakening?
They start to run out of stuff to release on 4th edition.

It will once again be impossible to get a seat at Starbucks because of all the damn Magic: The Gathering players.
Magic: The Gathering? How the hell will we afford that?

At least with D&D you can share books!

Well that gave me a good chuckle, especially the bit about the "new" editions of D&D in light of our past interactions on the relative merits of 4th Edition - if that actually happened I think I would laugh for days on end, heh. The natural synergy between Metal and gamers of the table-top variety though is one of those funny aspects of a genre that the average non-listener doesn't pick up on: Metal is, in the large, exceptionally nerdy. Power Metal in particular is more often than not exactly what your average sweeping fantasy campaign would sound like if you asked a bunch of dudes with long hair and loud instruments to sing about it, and any given Metal song is very likely to be based on or inspired by our collective nerdy "sacred cows".

*Scarpers off to go back to listening to his new Progressive Metal/Space Rock concept album about science fiction films and franchises like The Matrix, Firefly, Planet of the Apes, Children of Men, A Clockwork Orange, The 12 Monkeys, and Escape from New York*

Apparently there's no room in this new decade for mellow pop-rock fans who aren't really fond of DnD and other grognard-tastic pen and paper games... It's fine, I'll just be happy in my corner.

/me goes off to play Mouseguard and highly cinematic games with wacky gunfights and 'splosions with rules that don't take a million years to learn.

"White Wolf's drama-free World of Darkness"

First time that phrase has ever seen the light of day. White Wolf's tragically romantic (or maybe just tragic) vamp fans have been cutting themselves since before most Twi-hards were even born. (Full disclosure: I played in a large, long-running VtM larp. Surprise revelation: although the players included every stereotype you would expect and the action was dictated more by who wanted to screw (in all senses) who irl than anything else, it was actually fun.)

That had me cracking up. Still is a shame about Axe and the D&D with porn stars.

Wait, if they are back tracking into harder D&D, does that mean they will be bringing back the random tables? There was a surprising lack of those in 4e and one of the most enjoyable about 2e.

White Wolf's going to lead the pack of East Coast gangsta-RPGers? Wouldn't they have to, y'know, start publishing books again?

As a big Paizo fan you did get me with saying Pathfinder would take over 4th ed rules to pick up the slack for the new old school gamers. Well played, sir.

Meh D'n'D always had far too many constraints and way too much crunch to hold my attention.
If this bizarre collection of prophecies comes true then I hope wizards look more towards narrative systems such as Fate and PDQ.

An interesting read, funny indeed, and I hope to see an exploration of other systems and gaming antics in this new year of 2011 AD.
