Check Out This Joystick For The iPad

If you're a hardcore iPad gamer, you might want to check out this little accessory.

Virtual joysticks are a staple of game design when it comes to the iPhone and iPad, but they're not exactly beloved by those who have to use them. Sometimes the systems' touchscreen interfaces don't detect movement well, or the control area is too small for comfort. Ten One Designs is working to fix this problem with its newest product: an actual analog joystick that attaches to the iPad screen.

Dubbed "The Fling", the joystick attaches to the screen via suction cups. It features a transparent design and actually looks like a pretty effective way to control games on the system, based on the footage shown. The Fling's transparent so it doesn't obscure the view of what's going on beneath it, though customers can choose one of three color accents.

No official release date has been announced for the Fling yet. That said, the joystick can be pre-ordered for $24.95. This probably sounds a bit steep to anyone who doesn't play a lot of games on their iPad (which I do, being a game journalist), but it looks like a pretty cool little device.

I just laughed so hard I vomited blood, I am considering suing the Escapist for whatever permanent damage 3 hours of laughing just did to my body.

seems weird. The whole point of playing games on a device like that, imho, is not having a joystick. If I wanted that experience I'd play on a device that did have one.

And 30 bucks? Way over priced.

Indeed. I can't even fathom why someone would buy an iPad. it's not as convenient as an iPhone and it doesn't do half of what a laptop can do. It's ridiulous.

Well, for me, it's great. My eyes sort of suck, so it's great to surf the web with when I'm on campus and hanging out between classes (our computer labs are almost always packed). I keep my portfolio on it, I read books via the kindle app, I watch movies on it when I'm at the gym or on a flight, I have an App that let's me use it as a digital sketchpad, and I review games for iOS devices with another site.

Now, that said, there are a lot of folks who want it/bought simply for the novelty of owning the latest Apple device, which I think is a waste of money. For some of us out there, the iPad is great, and there are some genuinely great games for the device that I think will work really nicely with The Fling (like NOVA, Chaos Rings, or Across Age).

Also, this isn't an official Apple periphery. This isn't something Jobs had anything to do with.

Eh, sure, why not? If people are gonna go spend a bazillion monies on an iPad for the games and they can make more money by selling extra nik-naks to them, I say let 'em. I know it's what I'd do.

There are much better, and more importantly, much cheaper options if you are just looking for an all around tablet PC. But that's just me. I'd never buy an Apple product. I wouldn't even take one for free.

But, if you like it, knock yourself out. To each their own I suppose. Although, I believe more people will buy "The Fling" just to spend more of their money on their iPad and they will barely use it.

Think of it this way, the Ipad is a computer for those who are computer illiterate. If I were to teach my Grandma to use a computer, this is what I'd give her. Easy to understand interface, no mouse or keyboard simply touch what you want on the screen.

Edit: As a whole this is fairly pointless accessory, wasn't the Ipad/Iphone supposed to be about the lack of need for a external control device.

And yet everyone and their brother are struggling in a panic to copy it, seeing as how it sold around 10 million units in 6 months.
