Legoland Building the Star Wars Universe, Brick by Brick

This spring, visitors to Legoland California will be able to take a stroll through a brick-based recreation of the forests of Endor.

Legoland California is hard at work on a new Star Wars area of the park, which will feature scenes from all six movies and the Clone Wars cartoon meticulously recreated in Lego bricks. Ten employees from Legoland Germany have been working on the models for over a year, and their efforts will be unveiled in California on March 31. Lucasfilm has been working with Legoland to ensure the 1:20 scale models are accurate, and the entire project will use an approximated 1.5 million Lego bricks.

The scenes from Episode I and II will be set on Naboo and Geonosis, respectively, while the Episode III scenes will transport visitors to Kashyyyk and Mustafar. The original trilogy section will feature the iconic landscapes of Tatooine, Hoth, and Endor, and the Clone Wars scene is set in the Crystal City on Christophsis. Each set will be populated with the appropriate vehicles and characters, with AT-ATs on Hoth and Obi-Wan and Anakin locked in battle on Mustafar. The scenes will also feature sound and other unspecified special effects, and guests will be both able and encouraged to walk through these recreations.

The Star Wars area, which will be replicated in both Legoland Denmark and Legoland Germany, will also feature full-scale Lego models of Chewbacca, Darth Vader, and R2-D2 independent of the seven film-specific scenes.

I had an interesting idea to build a coffee table out of black Lego bricks and then creating an 8-bit themed table top (most likely of Mega Man) with smooth, flat tiles.

So I logged onto Lego.com, thrilled to find out that you can buy ANY quantity of ANY individual Lego piece in existence. My enthusiasm deflated, however, when I saw that each brick costs 25-50 cents individually. (Though you can buy multi-coloured (with a U) starter sets of 650 pieces for $30.)

So this project would cost somewhere between $100k and 500k or so in Lego.

Thats not a bad price for legos. And they give you a deal on bulk items. Perhaps they give you a deal on bulk orders of single colours.

OT: Awesome. thats all I can say. Its a shame kids today dont know the joy of playing with legos. I know its happening. My college roommate (18, same age as me), said he didnt know what a LEgo was. And he grew up in Washington DC. I raged, obviously.

Despite the fact that I could get to Legoland on my lunch break and work, I have never actually gone(mostly because it costs about as much as Disneyland). I think in a few months I am going to have to change that.

Where are the Lego fat guys yelling at Lego average moviegoers about how they should stop supporting the "rape" of classic Lego cinema going to be placed? One assumes at the park gates.

Yay, I love Lego!
Too bad I live in Hong Kong and another trip to California won't be possible for quite awhile.
