First Details for X-Men: Destiny Emerge, Involve Harvesting DNA

Silicon Knights is mixing hate crimes and superheroes in its upcoming game, X-Men: Destiny.

Details on X-Men: Destiny have been a little hard to come by. Aside from the few facts that people have been able to glean from the two teaser [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104150-Activision-and-Silicon-Knights-Giving-X-Men-New-Destiny] trailers [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106115-New-X-Men-Destiny-Trailers-Skimps-on-the-Details] - there's a war going on, and choices will be involved - we don't what the game is about, or even what kind of game it is.

Gameplay details are still virtually non-existent, but a preview in the latest issue of OXM UK [http://www.oxm.co.uk/] has offered a glimpse at the game's story. The game is set during the very height of anti-mutant hysteria. Hate crimes are rife and the X-Men have suffered a terrible loss. If the games are following the events of the comics, this could be Jean Grey, who was killed off a few years ago. The player is, predictably enough, a mutant, and the child of an anti-mutant "zealot," who considers this next stage in human evolution to be a huge mistake.

Players will chose one of three characters, all of whom have been integrated into the X-Men canon. Players will be able to modify their characters mutant powers by collecting - or perhaps harvesting - the genes of other mutants. OXM also says that there are a lot of opportunities to make choices and decisions in the game.

Besides the players' characters, the game will also feature long-standing characters from the comics like Gambit [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gambit_(comics)] and Magneto [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magneto_(comics)], as well as newer characters like the electricity-throwing Surge [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surge_(comics)].

I wouldn't be surprised if the game turns out to be an action-adventure title with RPG elements blended in, not entirely unlike Silicon Knights' previous game, Too Human. X-Men Destiny is penciled in for release in either the third or four quarter of this year. Publisher Activision has yet to announce what platforms it will come out on, but Xbox 360 would seem to be a given now, and it's hard to imagine the game skipping the PS3.

So We're playing sabretooth?

First I've heard of this game, sounds interesting.

Something about the "harvesting DNA" mechanic doesn't sit right with me. It could be cool. Or, maybe I'm just pining for another X-Men: Legends game.

So, a mutant Sylar (from Heroes)?

You get more powers by killing other mutants?
Appears so, but Sylar was always awesome. Maybe they'll be an alternative route to these powers which is more time consuming but no one is killed in the process.

Don't worry Jean Grey will be back, if she hasn't already re-incarnated I haven't read x-men for awhile. Unless this is referring to the third film.

This is like the fifth time they've killed her (I'm probably exaggerating but it certainly isn't the first).

OT: I'm not filled with hope for this. It could be great but I'm sensing one of Yahtzee's "Like God of War But..." moments is going to be involved in a review.

Am I the only one reading this and thinking, "Bioshock: Mutant Edition"? Granted, this is likely going to be third-person with little/no shooting but the whole 'collecting or harvesting DNA' part reminds me strongly of the Little Sisters gathering Adam. I wouldn't call Wolverine a Little Sister though...he's tear out my jugular.

Can't wait to see some gameplay on this one.

Please, no, do not make it like Too Human. Please God no, no, no! We have not had a good X-men game for ages. Can we just have this one nice thing? Please?

There is a very smug, very adolescent part of me that wants this game to only come out on 360, just so I can justify buying that console instead of a PS3, which has way more awesome exclusives. But whatever.

The makers of Too Human on a project about a franchise which stumbled through two mediocre Wolverine promo videos until, finally, it fell over and got put out of it's misery by Brett 'my name is big enough to be before the title even though I haven't made a blockbuster movie' Ratner and a comic that lost the plot the moment it let Grant 'I can fuck up any continuity I want' Morrison take control.

I think I might wait the two weeks after launch it takes to turn up in bargain bins before deciding if £15 is still too expensive.
