Microsoft Sold Out of 360s Last Month

December was very good for Microsoft.

Just how popular were Xbox 360s during the Holiday season? Pretty dang popular, as it turns out. In fact, sales were so high that Microsoft apparently sold out of the consoles, according to Larry Hyrb, AKA Major Nelson.

Hyrb apparently got a look at the NPD sales data that's due to be released tonight, and the results were more than a little surprising for Microsoft. "NPD tomorrow," <a href=http://twitter.com/#!/majornelson>said Hyrb via Twitter. "I found out we ran out of consoles at end of the month so don't expect to win Dec."

Hyrb also stated that Microsoft's "Jan/Feb supply is tight as well. Likely amazing YOY growth numbers for Xbox."

While the official sales numbers have yet to be released, research firm Wedbush Morgan estimated that 360s outsold PS3s two-to-one. Of course, the Kinect's release probably helped boost the console's sales, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105704-Microsoft-Sells-2-5-Million-Kinects-in-25-Days>seeing as how the device sold 2.5 million units in 25 days.

Of course it did.
It has a gimmicky motion sensor.

PS Move is too similiar to the Wii for it to have convinced those who already have a Wii to buy it, since it's pretty much the same thing.

What percentage of those 2.5 million you wanna bet bought/gifted the Kinect without realizing they needed to own an Xbox360 to use it...then went out and bought the console in December?

they probably sold well because of mass ring-of-death-age

i do love the xbox really, but kinect really doesn't appeal to me at all

that's amazing. That's an insane load of money for MS. I hope they use it to fix the problems in windows *snort*

Now I don't have a Kinect and have no intention of buying one but...are you crazy? All the interesting hacks that have been created using the device have shown that there are some great practical applications outside of videogaming.

It sold more than Micr0s0ft had expected it too?

Or they purporsefully limited the number?

Noo...surely they'd never do something so devious.

Here's a wacky notion; maybe some people went out and bought it because the kinects... well... good?

Don't get me wrong, I like my controller as much as the next guy, but the kinect's pretty damn fun. And it's far superior to the Eye Toy in pretty much every way (I still love you Sony, don't worry).

It's a just bit rash to write it off as gimmicky is all.

I never had any interest in kinect, ps move or the wii. It just seems to be a waste of money. My friend has a kinect and although it seems entertaining I see it as something you would get bored of fairly easily. Or at least I would anyways. Hopefully this increase in motion devices won't have a negative impact on regular gaming.

Wow, the sales would have been helped by Kinect obviously but it is still a good profit.

Also, to the people who say that Kinect/Move are EyeToy/Wii rip offs, well...

Yes, I agree, but how many of the people who bought a Kinect are trying to do new, interesting things with it? It's a gimmicky toy to the 99% of the people who bought it.

You sir, is fucking awesome. Thank you for that.

I guess it's really because of Kinect. Microsoft, make our day. SAVE PC GAMING XD

The Kinect and the sexy new xbox revision; no wonder they sold out.

However, I wouldn't consider buying the kinect, and the xbox's redesign was not enough to keep me away from the sex-station 3.

Why does everyone always pour on the hate whenever a company reports that it did well?

Bad Larry! Bad! Sales aren't a contest, you aren't "winning" anything. So stop encouraging the fanboys to think their console of choice is winning just because it sold more.
