Disney Closes Propaganda Games

Tron: Evolution [http://propagandagames.go.com/], has been closed down by parent company Disney Interactive.

Founded in 2005 by veterans of EA Canada, the Vancouver-based Propaganda had only two games to its credit, the 2008 Turok reboot and Tron: Evolution, the tie-in to the 2010 Disney flick canceled [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1104001/] in October 2010, a move which Disney said at the time "completed a restructuring of Propaganda Games, its Vancouver, B.C. internal studio."

With Tron: Evolution and its launch-day DLC out of the way, Propaganda appears to have fallen victim to more, and more serious, restructuring. "Disney Interactive Studios confirms the closure of its Vancouver-based internal game development studio, Propaganda Games," the company said in a statement to Joystiq [http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/propaganda-games-shuttered/]. "The studio has completed all work associated with its most recent project."

It's not exactly a fond and tearful farewell, but unfortunately for Propaganda it's not entirely surprising either. Movie-based videogames are pretty much a commodity these days; it might be important that BioShock Infinite [http://www.irrationalgames.com/] but which studio churns out the latest quick-and-dirty tie-in to a blockbuster film is almost entirely irrelevant. That makes them a natural target for cuts; that's not an indictment of Propaganda, it's just the nature of the business.

We here at The Escapist extend our best wishes to everyone at Propaganda who's been affected by the closure.

Great idea, Disney.
Cancel what looked to be turning into a wonderful game for a movie tie-in and then close the developer altogether. Smooth. >>

Shame, even though I don't like pirates of the caribbean, that armada of the dead game looked real interesting.

It looked real interesting at the moment... just like Epic Mickey...

Hopefully the devs can get something good done if they can get a new IP of their own.

You're kidding, right? There's no way it would have been any better than their Tron game. Their most promising project was the Turok reboot because it wasn't based on a movie, and even that ended up terrible.

I think I speak for a lot of gamers when I say that this is one of the least impactful studio closings we've seen over the years. Hopefully everyone affected by it can find new jobs...just not as designers.
I disagree. Armada of the Damned started looking really good and shaping up.

Reminded me of Legend of Black Kat but with some licensing slapped on it.

There wasn't too much information out but from what they were promising it sounded hopeful.

A full pirate sandbox game where your actions influence the world around you and how the AI interacts with the world.

Still, opinions and whatnot. I found Turok okay but it was only really carried by the premise of there being dinosaurs around.

Only liked the knife turok because stab raptors in the head
And Turok 2 because of the cerebral bore, and the sound it made was fucking disgusting.

I actually remember that game scaring the crap out of me when I was a kid.

The Turok reboot actually wasn't awful. Its just cool to jump on the hate train for it. I personally loved it. Its sad that we probably won't see another one ever again. Oh well =/

Shame. Tron: Evolution wasn't too bad actually. It had some good ideas, and only had terrible character models, and some gravity physics.
