Detroit Mayor Refuses to Build RoboCop Statue

RoboCop won't be protecting the city of Detroit anytime soon.

When Detroit Mayor Dave Bing asked the internet for ideas on how the city could be revitalized, one very smart idea came in through Twitter. User MT suggested that Bing build a RoboCop [http://www.amazon.com/RoboCop-Trilogy-Blu-ray-Peter-Weller/dp/B003VS0CYC] statue in honor of the city's cyborg protector of the late 1980s. Sadly, the suggestion was denied.

"There are not any plans to erect a statue to RoboCop," Bing tweeted back. "Thank you for the suggestion."

The Twitterverse was then infused with angry RoboCop fans that didn't believe Bing gave the idea a fair chance. "If I were mayor of Detroit, my top priority would be a RoboCop statue," one said. Yeah, maybe that's why you're not the mayor of Detroit.

Bing has been trying to make the city safer through various programs such as one that aims to bring police officers back into the city from their homes in the suburbs. Apparently, he doesn't think that a statue from an 80s movie will contribute anything to this goal.

Of course, it wouldn't, but it would be really cool if Detroit had honored RoboCop like Philadelphia did for Rocky [http://www.amazon.com/Rocky-Undisputed-Collection-Balboa-Blu-ray/dp/B002M9WW30/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1297212107&sr=8-1]. If Bing were to put a real RoboCop on the streets, that'd be a different story.

I have to lend some respect to this mayor. He resisted the awesomeness of this idea, saving taxpayer money in the process. Once our economy has recovered, then we can erect a statue.

So erecting a Robocop statue that will cause thousands of police officer to make a yearly pilgrimage to Chicago to pay reverence to said statue of Robocop, wont bring more cops to the city? This guy must be insane to not see that logic!

Woking: The Martian Statue

Nottingham: Robin Hood (Even though Sherwood is officially in Leicestershire)

Copenhagen: The Little Mermaid

Walsall: The Brown Hills Miner

Derby

Seriously Bing, you're missing out on a great tourist trap if nothing else.

This is why I hate living in Detroit... Ok, there are many reasons I hate living in Detroit, but this is just one more for the list.

I normally get quite annoyed with the personal commentary that gets provided with most Escapist news stories, but I have to admit, that made me laugh.

You. Robocop statue. Build. Now.
Although right now real Robocop would be helpful.
Damn, those movies were fun. Not explicitly well written, but just really really fun to watch.

I could be missing it, but I haven't seen a huge, committed fandom within the law enforcement community over RoboCop.

Man I would love to see a Robocop statue built in Detroit.
I also think it would be a much cooler attraction then the retarded blue football shaped archway we have.

Come on Bing as a tax paying citizen of Michigan I want to see this happen.

EDIT: and why football shaped arches?
we have the Lion's and thats nothing to be proud of.

Cool idea? Yes. Waste of tax dollars? Yes. Possible way of regaining those wasted tax dollars by way of tourism? Yes. I'd say the pros outweigh the cons.
