Rendition: Guantanamo Canceled

Rendition: Guantanamo, an action game set in a near-future Guantanamo Bay detention camp, has been canceled because of the "extreme reaction" to the game by U.S. media.

The game first Guantanamo Bay detention facility [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90342-Rendition-Guantanamo-Politically-Charged-or-Cheap-Ploy]. The game was set in 2020, a time when Guantanamo Bay had been sold by the U.S. government to a mercenary group, which in turn rented the place to scientists conducting "unethical experiments on living human beings." In that light, the title appeared to be little more than a cheap publicity ploy, attracting attention for reasons that have nothing to do with the actual game.

But it wasn't until former Guantanamo prisoner T-Enterprise [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moazzam_Begg#Release] said Begg was brought in to help ensure the accuracy of the prison design in the game and that the company had taken steps to ensure his participation didn't contravene any laws or agreements surrounding his release. His presence led to a flood of negative feedback, however, which has resulted the decision to cancel the game.

In a statement on renditionthegame.com [http://www.renditionthegame.com/], Chishti said much of the speculation surrounding the game has been "inaccurate and ill-informed," and that accusations that the game is a "recruiting tool for terrorism" have no factual basis whatsoever.

"First and foremost, the main character was NOT Moazzam Begg. Instead, his name was Adam. He happened to be involved in a case of mistaken identity and so was never a terrorist. T-Enterprise is against all forms of terrorism and would never seek to advocate otherwise," Chishti said in the statement. "Furthermore, Guantanamo was to be a mercenary run institution and so there would have been NO American military personnel killed within the game. Again, we support the British and American troops that fight the war against terrorism to make the world a safer place and would not make a game that said otherwise."

"The game was simply designed to be an action video game that adults could enjoy," the statement continued. "However, as a direct result of the extreme reaction that the game and its popular misconceptions have provoked, T-Enterprise has decided to pull out of the project and will not be completing Rendition: Guantanamo."

I didn't have much hope that Rendition: Guantanamo would offer any kind of worthwhile gameplay but I hate seeing games canceled on the basis of nothing more than the shocking ignorance spouted by people like Rush Limbaugh, who actually suggested [http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_060209/content/01125107.guest.html] that Bill Gates was, or could be, somehow directly involved with the project. On the other hand, by naming the game Rendition: Guantanamo, T-Enterprise was all but begging for this kind of response; complaining about it now seems just a tad disingenuous.

Somehow, I don't think the gaming nation is going to be too broken up about this. Honestly, it looks like a lame Manhunt clone.

I appreciate when games attempt to use the unique opportunities interactive media affords to make a statement. This game, however, admits that it wasn't doing anything of the sort. In fact, given the description, it doesn't appear they were planning on innovation of any kind. The only reason they chose the name they did was to achieve exactly the reaction they received. They were looking to attract negative attention, and accomplished their mission. I'm not going to mourn the fact that they didn't have the stones to deal with the fire they brought down upon themselves.

I find myself with a distinct sense of apathy regarding this news announcement. The game would likely have been terrible anyway.

I'm FAR more interested to see what the media's reaction will be to Dragon Age Origins/Mass Effect 2. Given their response to Mass Effect, I'm wondering just how they'll try to label these next games... they already used "porn simulator" after all.

The sad thing is that in this day and age bullshit is what helps the media stay alive.

So we can have 1000 games that relive Vietnam, but not this....Christ...

Edit: I bet these are the same idiots that thought they heard "Islam is the Light"....

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't shed a tear if it went ahead and died already. Maybe then it would bring itself back to something a bit more respectable, and i dunno, accurate. Maybe even meaningful.

I think it's a foregone conclusion that as long as it sounds conservative, Rush Limbaugh will pull anything out of his butt to make some coin, most times with little research to back it up. And frankly this game does sound like a snoozer. If those folks at T-Enterprise got a whiff of patience and ingenuity, they will sit on this for a few months, then just release this game with smart edits and a completely different plotline with the same theme, just not mentioning Gitmo at all. Right now Gitmo is a bad stain on the US that won't go away for quite a while. Germany still wears its stain with Auschwitz. (And yes there are differences between the two, but enough similarities) They still won't make much money, but it will be a thumb to the nose at the naysayers.
