They came out and said it. The press release is in my Inbox, and here is the relevant bit...

Nintendo also confirmed that the price of the Wii system, which incorporates unique freehand control, will not exceed $250 in America, or 25,000 yen in Japan. The company plans to ship 6 million systems to retailers around the world between its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007.

They're on the record now. I know I'm a bit of a fanboy, but they really seem to be putting together some momentum heading up to the launch. Here's hoping they keep it.

It's a good price, yeah, but it actually comes as a disappointment to me. I've heard flutterings of "not more than $200", so that's where my expectations were. I guess I can always wait until the first price drop.

At that price, I'm buying two. One to play and one to throw at the people standing outside Best Buy at 3:00 a.m. waiting for the PS3.

at that price, the Wii will soon be cheaper than hardwood, making it ideal for making quality furniture...

I'm not sure the Wii is big enough to do any real damage to the PS3 fanboys. Maybe you could strap it to an Xbox 360 power brick to add some heft...
