Molyneux Promoted To Creative Director

Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux has been promoted to Creative Director of Microsoft Game Studios in Europe.

They say that enthusiasm is infectious, and no one exemplifies this more than Peter Molyneux, whose unrelenting excitement for his work has earned him a special place in the hearts of gamers everywhere.

Even massive multi-national corporations seemingly can't help but be drawn in by him, as Microsoft have just promoted him to Creative Director for Europe.

In an interview with GameDaily, Mr. Molyneux talkeda about how he saw his new role:

"What you're not going to see is ten Peter Molyneux games. The value of this role is for someone like myself going in and making those little tiny lights of an idea shine as brightly as possible ... All I'm going to be doing is making sure those lights are as bright as possible. People at Rare and other European studios are super, super bright and creative people and I'll learn as much about design from them as they would from me."

Mr. Molyneux stressed the importance of innovation in design and said that he believed that 'passion' was central to a successful game, a trait that he has in spades. He also remains on as the boss of Lionhead

After the pile of crap that was Fable 2, I've discovered that I don't really care about anything that he says... 90% of what he claims will happen is utter shit.

I fully support Molyneux in whatever path he takes simply because his work is always a labour of love for making games, far more than the usual attempts to make lots of money. I wish more gaming exec's were like him...

Despite his unbridled and, to an extent, unfounded ambition/enthusiasm for the interactive-ness of his games, this makes sense. He is full of ideas, it's just that today's technology can't deliver what he wants to the degree he imagines.

He does actually love making games though, and the only problem I have with him is that when it comes to customer feedback, he doesn't always take the ideas and wants of the fans into account when developing new stuff. Fable 2 is the biggest example of this. Otherwise, Peter Molyneux is a great developer, I think he's done a lot for the industry, and no I'm not just saying this because I may end up trying to get a job at Lionhead within five years. I honestly think he's great for the industry, if only he'd listen to the fans a bit more. Hence I wish him all the best and I hope that this new job goes well for him :)

EDIT: I actually loved him even more last night after seeing the trailer for Milo. Finally, he's found something where his ideas aren't too far ahead of technology at the moment, and I think we'll be all the better for it :D

So? does every experiment work first time? No.
So Fable 2 wasn't great. Molyneux will come up with something interesting next time.

God, I just hate his face. Look at that, slime like that cannot be made. And in the picture he just looks like he's thinking, "Yes, all goes according to plan. We'll keep rambling on about interactivity, and then bury them in shitty Fable sequels! Hm...note to self, remember to burn down a puppy farm and orphanage on the way home. Muahahahahaha! Hey, is that what I sound like in my head? Cool! Hellooooooo! Piiiiiigs iiiiin spaaaaaace!"

Ok, silliness and stupidity aside, good for Pete Molyneux, just put that "interactivity" with the Microsoft bigwigs to work and do what you say your games will do without giving it all away up front. Make us work for it.

I wonder if that'll work out. I remember the reason for him leaving Bullfrog (the company he had founded himself) back in the nineties was doing too much executive work and red tape rather than making games. And it almost seems this is the same thing happening all over again. So let's just hope MS Game Studios puts the emphasis on 'Creative' rather than 'Director'.

I liked the original black and white, the only game I have played by him.
Good for him all the same though, he alwasy seems to have the industries wellbeing in mind.

Bullfrog was a slightly different story though, as they'd been absorbed into EA by that point.

I wish they would actually put him in a creator seat so he would actually would fullfil all his ideas.

But i guess this is a step in the right direction for him.

Ahh Molyneux.
He hasn't even started the job and has already managed to be overly optimistic.

Just as an aside:

Good for him moving up the ladder. Now I hope he just delivers everything he promises in the future. It cannot be denied though that he is a creative genius in the game industry, like it or not.
You're on probation now.
Oh the irony.
