Mega Man Rapper Turns to Final Fantasy VII


Random, known for entire albums of hip-hop songs about Mega Man, has now released an album based on Final Fantasy VII.

Hip-hop artist Random has gained a strong following through his "nerdcore" work on albums such as Black Materia: Final Fantasy VII [http://www.amazon.com/Mega-Ran-Explicit/dp/B0017T9LTE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298040411&sr=8-1], based on the game that launched RPGs into the modern era.

Similar to previous works, Random uses music from Final Fantasy VII [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-VII-Playstation/dp/B00000JRSB/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298040870&sr=8-1] with his and the album's guest stars' lyrics on top of it. Black Materia has 16 tracks in total.

The album's songs are about characters and situations from Final Fantasy VII such as the relationship between Cloud and Tifa, the attack on the Mako Reactor, and the unfortunate fate of Aerith. Random says: "I've never to this day been as emotionally invested into a game as I was with FF7, and doubt I will be again. My heart will always be in 8-bit, but I just wanted to give back to [FF7 creator Nobuo] Uematsu and co. for creating a masterpiece."


With Black Materia, Random proves he can do more than rap about the blue bomber. I'm always amazed at how professional artists can perfectly summarize videogame situations and turn them into music you'd actually want to listen to. Especilly the way hes used the origional music to build up the rhyme.

While I've got mixed feelings about Random's rap project that is showcased at the start of this thread, it's a finished product that's superior in every way to the Amazing Brand0 link provided. The link is to a practically embryonic concept that's lacking both in creativity and musicality, and misses the mark in terms of humor.

Maybe (hopefully, even) the final product will be a lot better, but I'm not sure what's been presented that seems to be of sufficient quality to garner your anticipation when there are any number of better treatments of that musical material available at http://www.ocremix.org, for example.

Brando and his former partner 8BitDuane have created a large library of fairly consistent quality music and tracks, while injecting a level of humor that I find greatly appealing. I also happen to prefer his/their style to Random's smoother R&B-patterned tones. For a larger sample for comparison, I suggest visiting Duane's, Brando's and their joint Youtube pages (or simply searching for them there). Still, Mega-Ran's songs and videos are quite good, and I'm grateful to him. As I am to all who do this so-called "nerdcore" music. Keep up the good work, guys!
