Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Finally Coming to PC, Without Online DRM

After many delays, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood is at long last getting a PC release and without that pesky online DRM crap from Ubisoft.

No self-respecting PC gamer could get behind the blaringly annoying DRM scheme that Ubisoft cooked up for Assassin's Creed 2 on the PC, which required an always-on online connection. It was even more irritating when Ubisoft's servers crashed, preventing anyone from playing the game [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98927-Ubisoft-DRM-Authentication-Servers-Go-Down] that they put down hard-earned money for. Ubisoft has since apologized for the gaffe, and it seems that the lesson was well learned because the online authentication scheme has been dropped for the PC release of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood when it comes out on March 17th. There's no word on whether that was why the PC version is coming out nearly five months after the console release.

"The PC version of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood after an initial login, will be playable offline in single player mode," a representative from Ubisoft confirmed today.

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood will come in various special and "Codex" editions. The Codex will come with an actual wooden box containing the main game along with the Abstergo Project and The Da Vinci Disappearance DLC, a 60-page book written by Altair, a map of Rome, a set of multiplayer trading cards, a DVD with three short films detailing the story of Giovanni Auditore, Ezio's father, and a bonus DVD with the soundtrack and other sundry goodies.

The Special Edition, packaged in Cold Foil (whatever that is), will have the DLC and a multiplayer character, the Officer, a stealthy assassin who can assassinate his targets with a swift and powerful attack, and a map: The Trajan Market. The Digital Deluxe edition has all of the above plus the Harlequin multiplayer character and a map called the Aquaduct.

Unfortunately, Ubisoft failed to disclose what each of these editions will cost in order to compare and contrast to get the most for your money. For those who are interested, the minimum specs for the game are listed below with what you should actually have to play the game comfortably:

Minimum Configuration:
SUPPORTED OS: Windows XP (32 or 64 bit) /Windows Vista(32 or 64 bit)/Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit)

I'm glad they learned from past mistakes. Does this mean the whole "DRM is the future of anti-piracy" thing is over with?

Finally!
And Ubisoft actually seems to be capable of learning? That is a surprise, but a pleasant one.

SOOO CLOSE, Ubisoft. I was about to cave in and put an AssCreed game on my wishlist but then I noticed you simply relaxed the DRM a bit.

I still refuse to buy it on principle alone. It's probably quite an excellent game, but until your DRM is completely the hell gone, I'm not gonna touch it.
I heard its got the "One Time Internet Activation" thing going on.

Really? It's a one-time activation? What's the issue?

@gibboss28 - Why too little too late? The game just came out.

I'm glad Ubisoft figured out that draconian measures never work; they engender much more hatred and ill will than they stop pirates.

Thanks but no thanks Ubisoft. Besides, it doesn't even look like my video card is on the compatibility list. I have to imagine that will change by next month.

I have to applaud you on your stance. Most people cave in and buy stuff even though they hate the people behind it.

OT: It's a beginning. Nice to see a company smart enough not to whine about how they shot themselves in the foot, but it's our fault. I may be interested in future products from you yet.

Well i think it is silly to demand a no drm at all, course i wondered how long their online drm would stand up anyway after the 3rd game released under that drm was hacked in a day. I wonder if it was the hiccups in the drm or the fact that was worthless in the face of pirates. the cynic in me says the pirates were more the cause of them dropping it then the outrage by people that actually bought the games.

Because that DRM system still exists, there are a number of games that are still using it.

Truthfully I'm still a little bitter about the fact that shit was put on there in the first place.

Also lets be honest, the only reason that its been removed is because the DRM failed, miserably.

If it did well they'd still be using it...and I'm meant to be happy about this? Nah, sorry no deal.

The what DLC? Did I miss something, here?

[small]Everything else on that edition is sheer badass. I'd buy a second copy of the game just for Altair's Dairy The Codex.[/small]

Re-releasing the Codex goodies that came with AC II? If my PC could even remotely support such games, I would get it since this would be the last chance...
