New Star Wars: The Old Republic Trailer Makes Us All Remember Why Boba Fett is Awesome

Profiling the character class "The Bounty Hunter" for the upcoming Bioware MMO The Old Republic, this new trailer has jet-packs, grappling hooks, wrist mounted flamethrowers, and wonderfully gratuitous pew-pew.

As if I wasn't salivating over The Old Republic enough, Bioware just had to tease us all with undeniably the most badass class in the game, the Bounty Hunter. The spring 2011 release date can't come soon enough. Along with three other classes in the game, the Bounty Hunter will only be available to the Sith side of the galactic struggle at the center of the game's story, with his Republic-aligned opposite being the Trooper.

Wearing heavy armor and wielding the most advanced weaponry, the Bounty Hunter is a one man army, sent to capture of kill powerful and highly-protected targets. The class can specialize into Powertech for enhanced defenses or the Mercenary for access to the most advanced weaponry in the galaxy. And hey, even if you find yourself in a situation that's too hot even for you, you'll be fine. You have a jet-pack.

The first thing that comes to mind watching the trailer is, of course, how great it will be to play Boba Fett on crack. The second thought, however, was how much the Bounty Hunter class reminds me of an evil Space Batman.

And I'm not sure which of those thoughts is more awesome.

This does look awesome I can't deny that.

But how will they fair against Jedi in PvP? Those guys have lightsabers!

Cortosis armour perhaps? GEEK OVERLOAD!

Awesome. Bounty Hunter is definitely going to be one of the first classes I roll - along with some kind of Force-user, since the only thing that rivals the coolness of a bounty hunter is a lightsaber.

Which means there will be an influx of Boba Fett fan boys in TOR.
As if there won't be a slew of Jedi, Sith, Trooper and other fanboys with the other classes.

I originally thought I would play a jedi knight on my first character, but I'm finding it hard not play as a bounty hunter. Bounty Hunter was what I originally wanted to play, and it looks like I will be going back to it. Many of the classes seem really awesome and I can't make a real decision of what I want to play first.

So for now I'll just say I will be a bounty hunter until another video changes my mind.

It looks awesome, but I have one major problem with SW:TOR right now: the good guy/bad guy faction system. It doesn't make sense in even the best of games, but this game is kind of taking it to a whole new level.

I hate the idea that I have to play a certain class just to play with my friends. I know a person whose boyfriend is going to get it, but he wants to play on the "bad guy" side, while she doesn't want to play on the "bad guy" side. Your faction determines your class, and that's just inherently wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that Jedi and Sith are enemies. That the Rebels and the Empire are enemies. But what the heck are Bounty Hunters and Smugglers doing on specific sides? Both are classes that should be inherently neutral. And that's just one example, but I won't overstay my welcome.

Basically it boils down to "enlightend self-interest" for Smugglers. They find it easier to smuggle goods in the Republic as opposed to the Empire. For Bounty Hunters it more about the Empire's willingness to employ Hunters to capture and kill targets.

The war they're describing has progressed to the point were no one can be strictly "Neutral" anymore. The timeline vid sort of go into that a little. The Smugglers became Privateers for the Republic, while the Empire manipulated the Mandalorians into attacking the Republic so there's this inherent dislike of Mandalorians (and by extension bounty hunters) by the Republic plus the Empire's willingness to hire freelance killers.

The other thing they mentioned was that on each side you still had a choice to be relatively nice or a complete jerk. So you could play a Bounty Hunter and play with a code of ethics as opposed to a thug for hire. It's possible to be on the "Bad Guy side" but not "Be a bad guy".

One thing I've noticed about the class information that has been released is that each side has a mirror but it's different enough that doesn't feel like a carbon copy of the other. The Smuggler and Agent are light armor, cover based, stealthy classes, but one prefers Pistols and the other Rifles.

The only Bounty Hunters in the films were depicted as working for either Darth Vader, Jabba the Hutt or Palpatine so they are not neutral.

I assume they will let you run more than one toon so maybe they should switch it up from time to time with your mains helping each others alts level

The Extended Universe is a more reliable source for information is it not? Having said that, I wouldn't know but I'm damn sure that they don't serve for a side. Whoever pays the highest sum of money gets their service.

While I'm ANYthing but a Star Wars fan, I imagine Bounty Hunters (generically speaking) go where the money is. Those characters all have money. I imagine if Luke waved around a large enough stack, even Boba Fett would have paused.

For months Bounty Hunter were awesome in Galaxies. Before the dark times, before the NGE.

Awesome. I'm definitely going to be playing either one of these or a one of the Sith classes for my main character, I think.

There are bounty hunters on both sides, just under different class names.

Also, Lucas has said he doesn't even look at the extended universe, he considers them two completely different worlds with movies on one side and everything else on the other.

I would love to get bounties on other players and hunting after them. If they would implement that, this game would beat WoW IMO.
