Favimon Fulfills Pokemon Cravings On the Web

A new internet game replicates the basic mechanics (and addictiveness) of Pokemon, and it does so for free.

The Pokémon titles are great fun, but not all of us have the ability to play them because we have jobs (or classes) which tend to make playing handheld videogames impossible to do. Or, you know, we don't own any type of DS console. Now, though, people don't need a Nintendo system to get in on the action, since a new free Web game called Favimon duplicates the fun of Pokémon battles for free.

Basically, the game features the same basic premise of the Pokémon titles, with users engaging in turn-based battles with creatures they find in the wild; if players win, they can add the creature to their army. Now, things are different in Favimon because the creatures are actually icons that appear on certain participating websites.

Visual artist/web designer Matthew Hollett created the game, which received the Most Original Game award in the Mozilla Labs Game On 2010 Competition. If you're interested in checking it out, you can head over to the official website or <a href=http://www.matthewhollett.com/favimon/faq.php>read the FAQ to learn more. I spent a couple of minutes playing the game, and it's pretty fun, so you'll definitely want to check it out if you're a Pokémon fan.

Have they spoken to Nintendo? I wouldn't want to see them get their nuts sued off.
No one's mentioned anything about that. The game may be fall under fair use/parody protection, but I'm not certain. The fact that it's totally free to play and doesn't do anything to damage the Pokémon brand probably does a lot to add to its defense, though.

It seems that porn sites beat the crap out of most other sites.

Interesting premise. I wonder if sites gain strength based on popularity

I'm sorry to say, that within 5 minutes of play, my Escapist favimon got obliterated by a wild Facebook. :(

Edit: It's simple, and yet I'm addicted. My current team consists of Facebook, Favimon, 4chan, Encyclopedia Dramatica, Twitter, Wikipedia, and Minecraft. Shit's going down.

Hi! I am the maker of Favimon. Thanks for the link!

To reply to the concerns about the legality of the game - I have not had any contact with Nintendo but was careful not to tread on their intellectual property when making Favimon. Obviously the basic idea of battle-based collecting was inspired by Pokemon, but I created the battle system myself from scratch, and the game mechanics are quite different. The game does not contain any Nintendo characters or trademarks (aside from being able to capture nintendo.com just like any other website). The favicon images themselves are hosted by Google. So I don't see any reason they would take issue with the game.

Glad you are enjoying the game. Thanks for the comments and suggestions!

First off, are you really the creator? Because that is awesome.

I don't know why everyone's wondering if Nintendo will shut you down, because it doesn't look like they have any right to, what, do they own the premise of capturing and battling things?

I have to say though "Most original game award"? Really? That's rather ironic.

Does everyone get a wild Favimon to start? Because it seems like a fantastic coincidence.

Favimon was awarded "Most Original" in competition called Game On 2010, hosted by Mozilla Labs. I think The Escapist article is making it sound like the game is a Pokemon clone, but there are ways that it differs from Pokemon quite a bit. I wanted to take the idea of a game where you battle and collect things and apply it to the web in general, using favicons. I like making interactive web stuff that lets people find and explore things.

Yes, everyone starts with the favicon for favimon.com. It seemed to make sense that way!

Keep in mind that this is the company that sent a C&D to suicidegirls because one of them said that they liked Metroid in their profile (though they later apologised).

Also the company that sent a C&D to people making a Legend of Zelda fan-film that they made no profit off of.

Nintendo's legal division doesn't seem to be the most... level-headed out there.
They didn't stop the translated emulations of Mother 3. >>

Oh, nintendo's legal division will eat all this up. Wonder how long till the lawsuit gets hammered in.
