New CryEngine 3 Trailer Shows How the Next Generation Could Look

Are you ready for more mind-blowing visuals from those dark sorcerers at CryTek? I hope you are.

Last time we took a good long look at what was possible with CryTek's CryEngine 3, it was a year and a half ago [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/95494-CryEngine-3-Demo-Video-Will-Blow-Your-Mind]. The latest demo video released at GDC looks just as shiny, if not even more so.

While there's still undoubtedly some power left to harness in the PS3 and Xbox 360 (the former more than the latter), it's things like this video that demonstrate where games could be headed visually after this console generation has run its course. I'm usually not a graphics snob who demands that every game have the newest bump-definition-ray-snorfling or whatever, but there's definitely something to be said for this level of sheer visual splendor.

Obviously this video, having premiered at GDC, is aimed at other development studios, in order to convince them to license the engine for their own projects. I don't really understand what "fully linear lighting pipeline" and "3D LUT support" mean, but I don't need to. All I need to do is look at the shiny, shiny cars. Boy, are they shiny.

Now to find a machine capable of running this engine on full specs. I just need to build a time machine first, to snatch it from the future.

(Thanks, Alai!)

I don't care how good it looks I'm not playing their games until they get back in the Cry-Jungle. [Diehard Farcry fan]

OT: Do consumer pcs yet exist that could run it though...

That engine looks beautiful. It begs the question "Why does the Crysis 2 demo look like shit?"

I still think that the Cry Engine 3 uses way too many shaders, just look from 0:17 to 0:25, the colour looks blurred and the light messes things up, its like the image has some kind of filter rape. Crysis 2 also has that "thing".

Same.

Does anyone want to explain to me how Crysis 1 looks better than Crysis 2 using older tech? I think it has something to do with consoles...

OK, I just sat watching that in a stupor and realised halfway through that my mouth was hanging open. That was stunningly beautiful. I wonder if human faces will still be stuck in the uncanny valley though...

That's neato. Very pretty.

Now show me cartoon-shaded graphics in CryEngine 3.

Spend 17 grand and you might have one that can run those graphics, still neat none the less.

Because Crysis 1 was ridiculously future-proof for its own damn good, Crysis 2 had to have lower requirements or else it will tank thoroughly because no one in the planet would be able to play it.

I'm not at all savvy at animation, but I'm in awe at the reflections and shadows.

Also: CryEngine 3 for Cinema.

While it's still technically impressive, it seems too shiny, I thought the idea was to go for realism in better graphics, and I'm pretty sure we don't put a chrome plating on everything.

Well, my eyes just had an orgasm with all that scenery porn [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SceneryPorn].

You should really mark this news post as "Not Safe For Work", just look at that car, all shiny and naked like that. It's degrading, is what it is!

Beautiful... simply beautiful....

Call me a graphics whore, but I love the realistic look and the tech behind it. Though I would of love it if they showcased more of the forest.

The term CryEngine made me think of some kind of bizarre, artificial, weeping construct... perhaps it would beg for death, I don't know.

now they just need to make mass effect 3 in that and everything would be great
also, am I the only one who thinks it looks better than rl?

Holy crap...

That was beautiful. Wonder what specs it takes to run a game like that...

You don't need a very high-end machine at all to run this at max spec ATM. Why? Because they don't have a game that even utilizes DirectX 10/11 with CryEngine 3 yet. And if rumors are to be believed, Crysis 2 won't have support for those until later, either. Currently, I do believe the rumors, because I e-mailed several of Crytek's divisions a good three days ago, asking about DirectX support at launch, and they haven't even had the decency to tell me that they can't reveal that information. Not a single peep.
Uhm yeah...I wouldn't worry about DX10/11 support for Crysis 2...

OT:
Damnit, now I've gotta clean all of this drool off my keyboard. Stunning, especially the forest scene at the beginning. Makes this PC user's heart flutter with joy! :D

Also, is anybody missing opline? Lord Inglip wishes me to return it.

Bet it's all pre-rendered, the C2 leak and demo looks like shit and nothing compared to this. Also C1/CW is and looks way better.

Which is funny, and kind of odd, because Crysis 1 was one of the first games to use DirectX 10.
