Battle: Los Angeles Game Can Only Kill An Hour Or So

If you don't want to go out to the theater to see Battle: Los Angeles, you can spend even more money to stay at home and have an even shorter experience.

Battle: Los Angeles was released on Friday to <a href=http://www.metacritic.com/movie/battle-los-angeles>some pretty dreadful reviews this past weekend. The tie-in game has also been released to a less-than-stellar reception, though the most-damning accusation is that the shooter isn't even half as long as the movie it's based on.

Kotaku's Mike Fahey recently bought the game on Xbox Live, expecting nothing more than some mindless FPS action. Apparently the game's not even good enough to be enjoyably mindless, as Fahey described it; it's not the worst shooter ever, but it's not good enough to really recommend as a purchase.

However, the biggest disappointment was the game's length:

The game immediately drops you in the boots of a marine fighting against the alien hordes that have invaded Los Angeles. You'll fight your way to a police station, pick up some survivors, escort them out of danger, stumble upon some sort of mother ship, destroy it, and the credits roll.

Now, no one's going to sit there and complain about the fact that this game is bad; after all, bad games are an accepted part of this industry. What's appalling, though, is the fact that this game costs $9.99 on Steam and PSN, or 800 MS Points on Xbox Live. Essentially, gamers are being charged more than a movie ticket costs for an experience that takes less time than watching the film does. Neither Konami nor Saber Interactive should be proud of their involvement with this, and they should know that folks who get ripped off are far less likely to buy their products in the future.

So it's like a demo that you buy, except that the demo's all we're ever getting. At least we don't have to hear too much horrible dialogue then.

Thats worse than Rogue Warrior. I saw that movie today, not the worse movie ever. In a nutshell the plot is exactly how that guy said it. Still better than Skyline.

Wait, there are still some people who buy movie tie-in games? Well, if they're stupid enough to buy this in the first place...

Woah! I mean Magicka costs $10 and I've put in hours into the single player alone, and still not finished it (I blame the lack of save points). Such a short game in inexcusable.

Well, on the positive side, it's being sold on XBLA and Steam, I doubt someone would buy this piece of crap if it's soon buried with fancier and artsy games and map packs.

Uh oh, better get Maeko!

Did I read that right? The game only costs $10 and people are upset?

You bought a movie-based game.

You should expect mediocrity, even in $60 games in that category. Feel lucky that you only spent $10.

Wait a minute, where do the Escapist contributors go to for their movies that a ticket costs less than $9.99? Around here, a standard ticket runs right around that price, with a 3D ticket being $11 or $12. That's USD, by the way, not Canadian or Australian.

OT: It's a ripoff, but what do you expect for a movie tie in game that was $9.99 at launch? If anything, we should be applauding these guys for cutting the price along with the length. For the length at hand, $9.99 is a bit much, but I think it would be great if we saw more AAA quality games with lengths comparable to a movie being sold at rates comparable to a movie ticket or a discount DVD.

Here in Australia, ticket prices tend to be over $20AUD. :(

But yeah, I can't say I'm suprised that the game sucked, even with it's promising trailer.

I played the trail on XBLA and the gameplay is horrible, absolutely horrible. Just playing the game made me realize that skipping on my homework, that I don't even have to hand in or get checked, is not worth playing this. >_>

I paid 4.50 canadian, which is on par with USD or close to it, but that was matinee, Regular is 9 and 3D is around 12.

Ouch. I figured it would be more than in the US, but I didn't realize it would be that much; matter of fact, I only specified that the prices I listed were in US dollars because everything is more expensive in Canada and Australia, and I wanted to be clear that the ticket prices I was listing were from the country that tends to get things cheaper.

Man, this is such a disasterous break from tie-in games rushed through to be released at the time of the movie. The makers of ET for the Atari 2600 must be spinning in their graves.

Oh wait.

Well, having a look at the gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEwkf4QNk0Y

it appears to be a run of the mill CoD clone with some aliens. Ones who apparently give no indication whatsoever of having been hit with a sniper's bullet.

We like to whinge about five hours games, but to be shorter than the film is a breathtaking achievement. Having digital distribution only and a cheaper price is no excuse.

Movie tickets cost ten bucks where I live, add on a few extra dollars if you want to see a 3d movie. Ridiculous prices

I'm pick it up on a PSN/XBL sale for $5/400 points.

Then it'll be worth the money, at least.
