Riddler Does Jigsaw Killer Impression in Arkham City

The Riddler is coming back, and he's even more sadistic than before.

Remember how, in Batman: Arkham Asylum, the Riddler harassed the Dark Knight throughout the entire game without actually making an appearance? Well, it turns out he'll be returning in the upcoming sequel, and he's going to have an even bigger, nastier role in the game.

According to Joystiq, Edward Nigma is still going to be challenging players with devious puzzles, but things will take a definite <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Saw-Leigh-Whannell/dp/B0006SSOHC/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1300302145&sr=1-1>Jigsaw Killer turn: Failing to solve the puzzles results in the deaths of innocent Gotham City citizens.

The revelation apparently came about in a press preview from GDC, but "WBIE's being stingy with the assets," so the character's not on display for the public, yet. Apparently the PR group in charge of Arkham City has said the video will be made available at a "later date."

The Riddler's always been one of my favorite villains in the DC Universe, especially when he recently became such a nasty piece of work after the "Hush" storyline (but before he was reformed and just became an obnoxious berk). I'm not going to lie: The thought of him as a ruthless killer who uses crazy deathtraps to toy with Batman is pretty sexy.

If that image in the OP is what the Riddler is actually going to look like in Arkham city then this gets a thumbs up from me!

Square Enix, you say? I could have sworn it was Rocksteady... (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, cough, cough...)

Also: Yay.

I've always liked the riddler. He and Two-Face always seemed to be a good team for some reason.

rocksteady is part owned by Edios and Edios is in turn owned by square Enix. However im pretty sure Warner Bros bought a majority stake in Rcksteady and will be publishing Arkhan City not Square Enix

Square Enix Europe (formerly Eidos) has confirmed that it still retains a 25.1 percent stake in Rocksteady

From wiki, partialy owned by square-enix.

Does it matter?

SE is a very hands-off publisher when it comes to it's Western studios, and wouldn't interfere, anyway.

And SE will be on the box as publisher, likely. GOTY edition of Arkham had their logo, after all.

It doesn't really matter, but people are getting nitpicky over it. I just took the damn thing out :p

Good. The danger with the Riddler is that he can easily get too silly. It's good to hear this.

I've always liked him as the villain who gives the chance for a good ending, just figuring it out can be hard. Death traps and puzzles that might mean a thing or two, at least they better. I don't want it to be, "you failed so nameless citizen #1 dies," unless they can really write it to mess with your conscious.

Okay, I'll admit... they've got my interest now. Putting the innocent in danger is a surefire way to push Batman's psychological buttons, and it does play well with the Riddler's motif ("Everyone besides me is so stupid, and I'll show them how stupid they are as they suffer for it").

Yes and no. They're both methodical (in their ways) and focused, but Edward Nigma's desire is to force the world to admit how smart he is, while the Joker just revels in breaking down order and sparking mayhem.

Honestly, it'd be interesting to see how they matched up against one another if it ever came down to that.

I hope they don't make the Riddler puzzles mandatory to progress in the game, or if they do they won't make it so I have to find every single one. In Arkham Asylum, the puzzles were mainly clever diversions that gave off some references that comic book geeks would gush over, and occasionally to rack up enough XP to upgrade a gadget. So long as the majority of them remain as an optional side-quest, I would love to see the Riddler some more.
