News Flash: Half of Gamers Play in the Living Room

Nielsen, the TV ratings company, breaks down which rooms in the house Americans play their console videogames.

My consoles are all in my office, 'cause that's how I roll. But I recognize that the rest of America is still centered around the large TV in the living room as the focus of their entertainment. Nielsen, the company who used to rule the TV ratings game, is falling by the wayside as DVR and games start messing with how people consume media. In a fight to stay relevant, Nielsen is branching into thinking about videogames and this survey reporting where Americans play their consoles is part of that initiative. The survey reported that 50 percent of America keeps videogame consoles in the living room, with the children's bedrooms having a console in 19 percent of homes.

The conclusions are not that surprising, but the level of detail is interesting. For example, most kids have an Xbox 360 in their rooms (28 percent) while the Wii is in last place there with only 14 percent. The opposite is true in the living room, with most of those consoles being Wiis (59 percent) and 360s behind PS3s at (42 percent). I assume that these numbers are based on asking if someone owns a PS3, where is it located in the house?

The only thing that these numbers have me wondering is: What about the bathroom gaming? I bet there are more than a few of you guilty of playing Pokemon on the toilette.

This is madness! What you need is a comfy chair, a desk, and the screen mere inches from your face.

You will feel the immersion, whether you want to or not!

That's interesting, cheers.

Not surprising at all that family room wins. I have my PS3 there as well as my PS2 hooked up in a bedroom... Not counting all the other systems that aren't currently hooked up because I wouldn't have enough room >_>

I have my own little side room next to my bedroom that I like to call "The Man Cave". It consists of a sofa, my computer desk and chair, and a 42" LCD TV.

Meh I'm class in that I read on the toilet XP

Anyway, what's with the lack of outside (patio/deck/etc.) play? As long as you keep away from the shitty glare and the weather is nice, playing on your laptop outside is fun!

I play where the biggest TV is, if that's the living room, that's where I'll be! (Unless I'm playing my PC, WHAT DO YOU TAKE ME FOR?!)

Gee.. we've got a Console based on motion sensing, and 2 others that recently acquired the capability. Motion sensing needs space to work properly. Living/Family rooms generally offer the most space. Hmmm...

My home systems are in the Living Room, I play on my laptop wherever comfortable, and when I'm on my DS, I'm generally not at home.

Toilette pokemon is the best kind of pokemon! What? Stop judging me!

Other than that, the living room armchair is really comfy. And my housemates would get upset if I moved the xbox to my room...

I have my PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS and PS2 all of a chair spin of me...

I feel so fat after realising this.

Are you mad?! Everyone knows gamers combust when left in direct sunlight.

(I totally go outside to play handheld games during the summer)

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. Who has their entertainment center set up on the back patio? Not to...er hrm...RAIN, on their parade, but that does pose a problem of precipitation

I've been known to play some classic RPGs on my laptop during the lazy summer afternoons at the lake. Its a refreshing experience honestly.

MY PS3 is in my parents room, the Xbox 360 and Wii is in the living room, I have a N64 and PS2 in my room and I frequently play the DS in the toilet...Bowel movements need distractions!

Hahahahaha...

Sorry.

I live in a one-room-appartment. As do a lot single persons between age 20 and 30 that are not living together with a partner. These people are a somewhat important demographic when it comes to gaming.

Which makes this survey a bit strange, caus, you know. Sure I play in my living room. But my living room is also my bedroom. And my kitchen. And my closet. ^^

Pfft! Yeah right. And the next thing you'll tell me is Bruce Wayne is Batman. *rolls eyes*

Seriously though, I don't think I've ever had my consoles in the living room.

I always wonder about people who game on their living room TV - don't your family get pissed that you're hogging their TV time? I ask this because of my frequent 10+ hour gaming sessions - it would've been hell if I didn't do that in my own lair on my separate VDU...

Well, duh. Biggest room means biggest/best television. Simple, really. Though, I have my computer on an end table in front of the couch, which sits in front of my dining table, which is right outside my kitchen. So...I have gaming consoles in most of the rooms of my house.
