Build Your Own Motion-Controller Minecraft Creeper

A Minecraft [http://www.minecraft.net/] fan has created the ultimate in home security devices: a motion-controlled Creeper that comes complete with hissing fuse and exploding noises.

What do you do when want to upgrade your home security situation and your landlord won't let you have a dog? You could buy an Uzi, I suppose, but I think a better response is the one settled on by Chris of The New Hobbyist, who took the opportunity to build himself "a near-life-size Arduino powered, motion activated, audio playing, remote controllable Minecraft Creeper."

The project involved two stages, "the electronics" and "the crafty bits." The electronics side of the equation included an Arduino UNO ["All good projects start with an Arduino," Chris noted], an Ada Fruit Wave Shield, an Electric Sumo CMoy Amp, a cheap remote-controller car, infrared sensor and various other electronic odds and ends. The creeper body is a simpler affair, created with cardboard boxes, paint, hot glue, masking tape and zip ties.

The net result is pretty cool. The little guy rolls forward and triggers a jarring explosion sound effect when something passes in front of it. For those who want to build their own, basic instructions and photos of the Creeper in various stages of construction are available at thenewhobbyist.com [http://www.thenewhobbyist.com/2011/03/motion-activated-attack-creeper/], along with "mostly function" code needed to make it work. And isn't he just adorable?

That is cool! He needs to make it out of plastic, now, to make it look better, and make it open up when it explodes or something.

Impressive, but I await the Mark II with animatronic feet replacing the wheels. And that creeper has to Look at you. That adds to the creepi..ness.

Wow. That's pretty damn cool, but I wouldn't have one in my house. I spend all my time keeping those green buggers out. Also what in the name of all hell is an "Ada Fruit Wave Shield"? It sounds like something from a Mass Effect Confectionery store.

EDIT: Apparently is "Adafruit" not "Ada Fruit" that makes slightly more sense.

You're right. It is adorable! I want one. I'll feed it, and care for it, and walk it, and feed it and... Ehhh... Make sure it doesn't explode?

Someone made a fake one. Now i bet someones out to make a real one. Somehow i get the impression that whoever makes the real one is going to win a Darwin Award.

This is the last thing the world needs. But I think a police bomb squad should buy one of these for irony.

Arduino - is there anything you can't do?

if he can make the sound effects cleaner and louder this could be the Ultimate House alarm

i can see the expression of the crook entering the house to be molested by this creature, and his scream when it hisses and explodes "O SHIIIIII- *BANG*"

You would have to hope that the robber is a minecraft player, but if he is it will work like magic and all you'll have to replace is the broken window he jumps out of.

If I heard that infernal hissing noise behind me in the middle of the night, I might have to burn the whole damn place to the ground. Just in case.
