Nintendo Responds To "Black Screen of Death"

If your 3DS is suffering from the "Black Screen of Death", then Nintendo has got a fix out that should take care of the problem.

It didn't take long for Nintendo to respond to the <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108793-Some-3DS-Units-Plagued-By-Black-Screen-of-Death>smattering of reports that some European 3DS units were randomly crashing. The company has acknowledged that there is a problem, but it's not widespread and is supposedly pretty easy to fix.

According to Nintendo:

"If anyone is experiencing any problems with their Nintendo 3DS console, we recommend that in the first instance they download and install the latest system update, now available online. If the problems still persist we recommend they contact their local Nintendo Customer Service centre to investigate the problem further."

While it's good to hear that the issue can be (probably) taken care of by downloading the latest update, it's still a bit odd that only a small number of units were hit by the bug. Did any of you pick up a 3DS and have a problem like this? If you did, were you able to fix things by downloading Nintendo's patch?

I've played SSFIV online, used my DS flash cart, done everything that people say causes it and had no issues.

Wow. That sucks for people that actually experienced that screen. I'd be surprised if I saw that...if I had a 3DS.

Pfft, I wouldn't get one if you paid me with a gem encrusted, pile of golden dookie.
How about golden cookie dough? The idea of gilded feces is making me queasy...
Whatevs, the point is I wouldn't buy one.

Least it is only a small number, still odd though, you would think it would be happening to many systems everywhere. Especially if it's a bug in the system.

I think some people can't look after consoles properly tbh and have probably tried hacking it =\

I heard about this at one point, though I forgot where.

Either way, it's nice to know I didn't by a 3DS yet, instead of being a Guinea pig.

Flash cart? You know that the 3DS has an always-on DRM and sends information on everything you're doing with it to Nintendo every time you connect to a wireless network, right? Probably just a matter of time until they brick your system...

Just FYI.
You realize that Flash Carts use signed code from real DS games to launch on DSis and 3DSs, and that Nintendo would have to be insane/stupid/both to think they wouldn't get in legal trouble for bricking consoles that run code they don't like, so you're just just being an overly paranoid moron, right?

Just FYI.
You realize that bricking the consoles is well within Nintendo's rights, as it's in the EULA or whatever that comes with every system (as was stated in news reports on this very site), and that you're being obnoxiously rude by calling him a paranoid moron, right? Not to mention that I can only assume your flash cart is used to play pirated games which is, by all means, illegal.

Just FYI.

More on topic, I'm glad to see Nintendo up and at 'em so soon. I still need to see a better library of games before I consider buying one of these, but at least it looks like it'll have their full support.

Seriously, though. More, better games, please. Let's get out of the gimmick phase sooner rather then later with this system, eh Nintendo?

But the real question is, do we get to the see the error message in 3D?

'Cause that would be totally worth it.

EDIT: Ninja'd. Hard.

It could be that all systems are susceptible but the problem only occurs if a few unlikely events occur.

We seem to be entering a time where consoles, despite supposedly uniform technology, experience less than uniform problems. Take Fallout New Vegas, I've talked to multiple people who played this on the XBox 360 and PS3 and experienced almost no crashes or similar glitches while others can hardly get the game to run. When this happens with PCs you figure it's some problem with specific hardware components or drivers or conflicts, etc. but this shouldn't be the case with consoles. Age and use doesn't explain this either.

Great solution Nintendo, this is right up there with "If your computer loses its internet connection, visit our support website with the affected computer"

This response is such a cookie-cutter blanket response that it annoys me, "install updates, contact support" yeah, obviously, anything specific to the situation we could try?

And only Europeans tried to hack it? I don't think so.

LOLZ, sorry dude.

I'm so glad I didn't buy one though. Sure it's impressive, but it's big selling point i think is the 3D AR, and a few months down the line who is going to remember that, I'm betting on no one.
