Mr. Spock Joins Transformers Movie Cast

The man behind one of the most evil Decepticons of all time, will soon be playing one of the oldest Autobots.

Leonard Nimoy, most famous for his performance as the ever-so-logical Mr. Spock on Star Trek, is joining the cast of Transformers: Dark of the Moon as Optimus Prime's predecessor, Sentinel Prime. The venerable Autobot put in an appearance in first teaser trailer for the movie, or at least, what was left of him, after his ship crashed on the moon.

Director Michael Bay said that he had toyed with the idea of asking Nimoy to appear in the second Transformers movie, Revenge of the Fallen, but felt that even with the film's enormous budget, he wouldn't be able to pay Nimoy enough to get him on board. "I was too scared to ask him," Bay said. "Plus, he's married to Susan Bay, who's a cousin of mine. So I had to be careful." It seems his fears were ill founded, however, as Nimoy reportedly said he was "honored" to appear in the movie.

This will not the first time that Nimoy has lent his voice to the Transformers franchise. Way back in 1986, he played Galvatron in the animated Transformers movie. Galvatron was born from the ruined body of the nearly-dead Megatron, and served the planet-eating robot Unicron - at least until he betrayed him, thinking he could make the ancient horror his slave using an ancient Autobot artifact. Nimoy's new role, Sentinel Prime, first appeared in the spin-off Transformers comics and has been a part of the canon for years. Despite this, he didn't appear in a TV show until the Transformers Animated series that started in 2007.

Bay says that the robot character has more personality in Dark of the Moon than they've had in previous films, and that audiences will be able to understand both sides of the struggle. Nimoy has an amazing voice, and joins the likes of Hugo Weaving and Peter Cullen - who also have amazing voices - in the "giant robot" part of the cast. If Bay really is going to give them, and the other voice actors, more screen time, this might finally be the best Transfomers movie yet.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon opens in theaters on July 1st.

Looking forward to hearing his voice again. Hopefully the movie won't be so bad.

I hope that they don't repeat the extreme badness present in Transformers 2. It was so bad...

There is so much potential in the franchise too...

As plausible as this sounds, I can't believe anything posted anywhere today. This whole day is enough to drive a man with a constant RSS feed insane.

I just hope that it is close to the second transformers. Frankly it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. Love the trolls though that say they hate it, trying to be ironic or w/e.

This, may as well call it my "break from the internet day" :p But if it DOES happen to be real (which I doubt) I think that it would be pretty cool

Totally forgot Hugo Weaving did Megatron's voice, can barely recognise it lol
I wonder if they'll do the same for Spock?

Considering he announced last year that he wasn't going to appear in any more films at all, I have trouble believeing this.

If you click the original EW link, it was apparently posted yesterday. I'm guessing real.

It was poorly written and poorly acted - and I'm not even a Transformers fan. I can completely see why they hate the movies. If someone took a series I love and boiled to down to "CONSTANT ACTION YEAH EXPLOSIONS", I'd be pissed too. They're not trolls, they're just very angry.

Unfortunately, I don't think any attempt asides from finding a new director, new cast, new plot, and generally just scrapping the whole thing as a bad dream can save this movie for me...

If his voice is still up to Galvatron standard then I all up for it.

Oh no! Nimoy, stay away from Michael Bay!! He's evil!!
I'm a ridiculously huge fan of Nimoy, and his voice is awesome, and I may see this movie only cuz he's in it. But why does he have to get in bed with the Transformers movies???

Consulting the Care-O-Meter...calculating the Nimoy Factor...solve for X-citement...nope! Still don't give a shit. Nice try Mr. Bay.
