New Mass Effect Novel Coming This Fall

A new Mass Effect [http://www.amazon.com/Mass-Effect-2-Pc/dp/B001VJ4DHK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1302022055&sr=8-3] novel entitled Deception is coming this fall that will continue the "completely original" story told in the first three books.

Did you have any idea that there are three Mass Effect novels floating around out there? I sure didn't, but it's totally true: Retribution [http://www.amazon.com/Mass-Effect-Revelation-Drew-Karpyshyn/dp/034549816X/ref=pd_sim_b_5] have each done their bit to deepen the Mass Effect universe, using established supporting characters like David Anderson and the Illusive Man as well as brand-new creations like Gillian Grayson, a young biotic who falls victim to illegal, horrific Cerberus experiments.

Now freed from Cerberus' clutches, Gillian begins to master her amazing powers but soon falls under the sway of another radical group which believes that the extraordinary capabilities of biotics makes them superior to ordinary humans. Now Gillian must choose between her destiny - and her humanity.

The first three Mass Effect novels were written by BioWare veteran Drew Karpyshyn but Deception is being penned by William C. Dietz [http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_tc_2_0?rh=i%3Astripbooks%2Ck%3AWilliam+C.+Dietz&keywords=William+C.+Dietz&ie=UTF8&qid=1302022319&sr=8-2-ent&field-contributor_id=B000APAA1O]. The loss of Karpyshyn, a lead writer on both Mass Effect games, might be a point of concern but Dietz brings some very real credibility of his own to the job: he's written more than 30 novels, including three Star Wars books and tie-ins to Halo, Hitman, Resistance and StarCraft 2.

Mass Effect: Deception is slated for release this fall.

Sweet! I loved the first 3 books, nice to see they are continuing the story. Can't wait to see Gillian kick major ass.

Currently reading through the third book. Really liked the first two and it's cool to see them using the same characters.

Will look forward to this. Shame about the author changing though, hoping it doesn't impact it too much

That's fine. Karpyshyn's a solid game writer, but his prose can be a little bland. I look forward to see what someone else can bring to the table.

Funny, I mentioned to someone on another thread that I'd be interested in a novelization of Mass Effect just the other day. Guess I'll have to take a read...

They're definitely enjoyable, but depending on your reading speed, you can probably get through each one in 3-5 hours. Don't expect them to take all summer. :p

Haha yeah, I read that they were quite short.
But it's cool, I got a load of other dense books that I have to read, so they'll be a damn refreshing><;;

I'm actually kinda interested.

However, I find it hard to believe that a video game novel could be any good.

Awesome, I have loved the previous three novels and can't wait for this addition to the Mass Effect Universe.

Dropping Karpyshyn? Boooo! (although the last book wasn't exactly good.)

Still, I will end up buying it since it's a part of the Mass Effect universe, and I'm an utter book & Mass Effect nut.

Nice. Will be great to read further about Gillian. Just need to read Retribution too so I'll be fully prepared for Mass Effect 3.

I've read all three so far.

They aren't all that great - I'd really only recommend reading them if you want to learn more about the ME universe, as they're pretty mediocre on their own merits.

If you are just looking for something to flesh out the ME universe beyond the games then by all means give them a shot. Retribution is my favorite so far as it gives you a first hand look at how Reaper in Indoctrination works. Revelation tells the story of what went down between Saren and Anderson prior to ME1 - but honestly kind of ruins Saren's character for me, because it makes him much less sympathetic, which kind of sucks in my opinion.

If it is still before the reaper invasion Gillian can not be much older then 14 or so.
Hope they delve a bit deeper into Quarian life.

Sounds great. I liked the other ones, although Ascension was somewhat bad. But, at least you get a little deeper structure into the background of the Mass Effect Universe, with them.

I look forwards to it (And Gillian Grayson was awesome, of course).

Ok, this had me util it got to the Dietz bit. I've read exactly one book by him, and it was so horrible that I swore him off for the rest of time. It was the Halo tie in, and I've read fan fiction better. I may pick up the other 3, but I'll be sitting this one out for sure.

I liked the first three books, Drew is a great author, he did the three Darth Bane books in Star Wars and I really wish he was doing this one. Dietz is a horrid author, I've read his one Halo book(to date the only one that I HATE) and all three SW books and they all sucked. He did a little better with Heaven's Devils but that was because it already had strong characters that he didn't need to expand on.
