I think you're missing the point- they're both DS games, which is what's relevant here.
And to the OP- if you like Pokemon, buy it. Screw your room-mate's opinion- if they don't game, what the hell would they know about it?
Also, a 20-something guy who doesn't game at all? Weird. Surely you can find someone just as good who also likes games.

22 isn't to old for Pokemon, according to my 22 year old friend that plays Pokemon.

If people look at you weird, just blame the nostalgia effect :p

I play, my wife plays, my teen kids play and I hope my 1year-old daughter plays when she grows up. The only reason you should play or not play a game is because you want to.
I'll be in Dallas in a month at the Pokemon Platinum tourney and I guarantee there will be hundreds of other adults there playing too.
