Blizzard Raises BlizzCon Ticket Prices For Third Year Running

One of the priciest conventions around is steadily getting pricier.

If you're a Blizzard fan and you've set your heart on attending the BlizzCon convention in October, your pockets are going to have to be a little bit deeper than they were last year, as Blizzard is increasing the ticket price for the two-day event for the third time in a row.

Tickets will now cost $175, an increase of $25 over last year's price. Besides the regular tickets, Blizzard will sell a small number - around 200 - of special tickets for the princely sum of $500. These include access to a special benefit dinner, and some of the proceeds from the ticket sale will go to help the Orange County Children's Hospital. Blizzard will sell the tickets in two batches through its website, and those unable to secure an actual ticket will be able to get a "Virtual Ticket" for $40, which will allow online access to live video of the event.

In a keynote speech [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94802-Blizzards-AGDC-Keynote-We-Lose-Money-on-BlizzCon] at AGDC in 2009, Blizzard's Frank Pearce said that the company didn't actually make a profit from BlizzCon. On the contrary, he said that it made a "significant loss" for Blizzard. The likeliest explanations for these price hikes is either that Blizzard is hoping to turn things around and actually make some money from the event, or that it is trying to minimize the loss without scaling back the convention itself.

BlizzCon takes place on October 21st and 22nd at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim California. Tickets will be available to purchase on Saturday, May 21 at 10AM Pacific Time, and Wednesday, May 25 at 7PM Pacific Time.

And they will still sell out in less then 20 minutes. If people will pay the price then they don't need to worry.

As usual I will sit at my computer and slam the f5 key on MMOChampion. ...I figure it's probably about the same, without the loss of the bottom of my purse and the convenience of avoiding every sweaty WoW nerd dedicated enough to talk my ear off about how much more superior their <insert group, guild, pvp team> is compared to mine.

Result!

Blizzard does nice things. They do a lot of nice things, really. They're good at what they do. It's just a shame they're apparently famished for money, as well.

This is kind of ridiculous but what to do?

They make us pay 175$ to have them try to sell their games to an audiance that will probably buy those games no matter what.

They like money. The end.

Also, paying 40 dollars to watch the event online? WTF?

You look a lot like Matt Smith. It amuses me.
I like to think I'm slightly better looking at least. :p
Maybe a little, but he's not that bad looking. He has a nice square jaw. *awesomeface*
*smug grin*

Cheers.
I'd also say your mate looks like a 'more aware of whats going on' version of Rory, but...=D
Ha! In that photo, I guess he does!
I tend to do the whole "Suit and Converse" a lot more than "Bow Tie and Fez" though.
My ex got pissed off I got called "the Doctor" and she got labelled as Sarah Jane...

I'm sorry, but Blizzard not making money from Blizzcon just sounds like an outright lie. Last year the tickets were, what, $150? And if I recall, they were sold out. They made money. This year they just hope to make even more, and they will. I'm pretty sure that even the $500 tickets will go in mere seconds...

They aren't making a profit? Yet they are donating money to charity? Seems kind of weird and not very business-like. Usually companies only donate after their expenses are covered. But hey, I'm not the CEO of Blizzard, I'm just some guy on the internet. They can charge whatever they want and if they are willing to take a loss to donate to charity then that is great. Either way I am indifferent.
